Suggest an itinerary for 10 days in Mongolia?

Planning on doing a 10 day trip from Ulaanbaatar in September.

Hoping someone might have done similar and have their itinerary to share?

Ideally we don't want to spend all day every day on the bikes and have a rest day or two.

Would we manage to do some of the Gobi desert and make it to Lake Khusavgol or is that too optimistic?

We'll likely be on KTM 450s or DRZ 650s so ideally some off-road fun along the way, though I think this is on the cards whatever route we choose?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and tips!

10 Days in Mongolia

Gobi is South and Hovsgol is North.... Lake is 1000 Km's from UB so allow 2 days ride to get there, can recommend a great place to stay mid way if needed.

South, 500 Km's South East of UB is Durangob, you can visit the Energy center and see some amazing landscapes etc. one day ride...

So you could go South stay a day and head North to the lake and back to UB...

The road between Altai and Tosontsengel is amazing. The first 100k north of Altai was in great condition (early July) then is runs through a series of valleys up onto higher steppe. Brilliant views and classic endless steppe of swaying grass.

Around the Altai mountains is also nice, even the road from the border to Olgi has some very nice stretches.

I did it on a Transalp so I imagine you will have about 10 times more fun on a KTM 450! Should be awesome!

If I were you on a bike like that I would try to stay off the main roads which a universally washboard/corrugation due to the traffic and trucks. Do a bit of work on google maps and try pick out some smaller trails.

Thanks for the input guys.

Looking at bike rental options and we have seen found a bargain Mustang 150cc bike available to rent, so thinking of potentially putting my lighter lady partner on a mustang and me with all the kit on the bigger bike.. Thoughts?

Regards your suggestions Deezer - would it be easy enough to approach this as a loop rather than out and backs?

Do either of you have any GPS tracks available?

Sorry Daze, one more question, I guess you're meaning this road:

https://www.google.com.sg/maps/dir/T...22!2d46.372778

How much of a road is it? Would this qualify as smaller trails in part? Or is it more of a main road in it's entirety? Just trying to gauge really :)

This ist mostly sand and gravel road.

At least it was last year.

Yep thats the stratch, the best sections are around Ulaistai.

This is the main road though, not a side road, which means it can be just two parrallel tracks in the grass. Having said that we saw little traffic on it and in general the condition was very good.

Regarding taking a loop, personally I can't stand doing out and back and I would always prefer to find a loop.
