Tadjik/Kygyz border Daroot-Korgon / Achikalma

Hi there,
does anyone know if the border between Daroot-Korgon (KYR) and Achikalma (TAJ) has reopened?
On the website caravanistan is just mentioned that it should open again in 2014. Are there news about that?

On our trip from Kyrgyztan to Tadjikistan and back to Kyr we would like to avoid to cross Uzbekistan.
If it is not necessary to head directly to Dushanbe from Kyrgyztan border would you recommend a detour via the northern route from Osh and cross at Batken/Isfara? I haven't read about this region yet but I would like to know how road conditions are and how many days I should count for this.

Thank you!

Just out of curiosity why would you like to avoid Uzbekistan?

As far as I am aware the Daroot-Kurgon border post was only opened to foreigners as an emergency measure during the time when Gorno-Badakhshan Region was off-limits due to some violence there, I don't see why it would re-open again.

There is at least one other Kyrgyzstan - Tajikistan border crossing, as I have posted on Caravanistan, which runs from Kulundu (near Isfana) to Ovchi-Kalacha (near) Khujand.

Caravanistan is probably the best resource to keep up to date with such things.

Thomas,

The Batken crossing is simple.

On the Kyrgyz side from Osh you will be on long sections of very good tarmac, one short gravel detour around an Uzbek enclave and a section of roadworks closer to the border.

When we crossed last year the border was very quiet. Make sure the Tajiks don't forget the customs documents for the bike/car.

On the Tajik side the road is quite good until you reach the Anzob tunnel. This is an experience. Best googled yourself but easily passable unless you're of a nervous disposition. The road from there to Dushanbe is exposed but very good.

Easily ridden in two days. Bushcamp possible on the Tajik side of the border or stay in Khujand.

Hi James,

due to costs and time. I would like to spend more days in kyrgyztan and tajikistan, experience those countries more intensively than rushing through too many countries and having seen actually nothing.

Uzbekistan has a very interesting cultural heritage but the most interesting things are too far west for our tour as we will come from the northeast. And the main aim of our route is southeast asia. so it will be like a side trip, a very long one by the way and I am not sure if we will have the time doing it in a relaxed way. and if we don't have time to visit a country we don't want to spend costs on visas and registrations for nothing. That's the simple reason.

And as we like to drive through the pamirs on the way back to kyrgyztan I'm looking for a alternative border crossing into tajikistan that makes a loop possible.
