Tires available in Ulan Batoor or Tashkent?
 

Hi, my name is Marjos, femalesolo on my way to Mongolia and back to Amsterdam, but currently still riding in Scandinavia (going via Nordkapp).

Riding a f800GS, on TKC's 80 right now, and as it is planned, i need a tire change somewhere in Ulaan Bataar or Tashkent.

Question: would there be tires available overthere?

back 150/70 -17)

Am not picky, but i also have an option of picking up tires in stpetersburg in two weeks en haul them with me, which i dont look forward to.

hope someone can advise me on this?

I got Metzeler Karoo for my GS 1200 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in your way from Tashkent to Mongolia. I don´t remember the name of the shop, but I left their web here, in the hubb, so search for Almaty and you´ll find out the information.

For bikers help in Tashkent, try this thread. I got very good help there.

My advise: keep tyres with you anyway. In similar trip (going back Europe riding), I changed two times. You will not enjoy waiting one or two weeks for tyres while your visa runs out of time. Ex soviet burocracy could be very annoying.

You will not be able to get tires in Ulaanbaatar, and mailing them ahead is VERY expensive if you use a reliable service like DHL. If you bring some with you there are shops that can mount them for you. The TKC-80s are very good tires for Mongolian riding.

Many riders strap their new tires to the outside of their panniers. It makes your bike pretty wide but on the positivei side if you tip over you have some rubber protection in place.

you wont get em in Tashkent either. Almaty your only shot. They might have them there, but will definately have them if you order and pay upfront. Almaty is a biking town. Tashkent and Ulaan Baatar dont even have bike stores, let alone 17 inch tyres. Almaty also has a bmw motorrad dealer.

+1 for Almaty.

Get some tyres from MyTownMotors as you head over towards Mongolia. If you are passing back via Almaty also, I would suggest ordering a second set from them after the mongolian beating.

Thanks, makes it clear, i'll probably lug some heidenauers k60 with me then and maybe change even earlier (Irkutsk even?). I did some math last night and I'm now in scandinavia and having 4000 km on them. Because i'm riding the other way round (clockwise), st petersburg, then siberia, baikal, then mongolia and then via stans west again, so almaty comes after mongolia for me, and i dunno if they last that long..

@colebatch, excellent trip, Erik (the metal master) recommended your site already! couldnt pm you directly. Do you have an address of the bikers club in irkutsk, they can probably help me out with the tirechange?

good choice of tyre ... Russia is much easier ... take a look at some of the comments in the Krasnoyarsk blog post ... there is the contact details of a friend who is a bike tyre dealer in Russia. He can supply and ship tyres to assorted locations in Russia. if he doesnt have a contact in Irkutsk, then try and use the Bike Club there ... Will pm you with details when i can find them.

I found some really good ones at my guest house and brought them off the guesthouse owner (im really sorry if they were yours)
There is a motorbike shop and your other option is to ask this guesthouse.

I am sorry to say but BMW Dealership in Almaty doesn´t know anything about bikes. They had just one K1200R for selling. The most unapropiate bike for that country. I have one in Spain and I would hate ride it in the traffic jams of Almaty or the rest of kaz bumps roads. They should think it is expensive enough for the new petroleum richmen. But even more, no tools no spares, no knowledge at all. They didn´t have the BMW key to leave out the oil filter and, definitely, they don´t understand bikers.

Neither does help Tashkent BMW dealership. Better go to VM bar, as Colebatch recomended me.

I carried two tkc80 for 6 months on my 1150gs adv. And it was a breeze because I used my home made tire carrier. I never had the hassles with tying everything down to the bike or difficulties getting into my panniers.

By the way, where in Scandinavia are you? I'm from Oslo and should know about a good place or two to go.

I thin Almaty is your most reliable option for getting 17" tyres out that way.

However riding through last year we managed to find some along the way. Two in Chita and two in Ulan Ude. Both times by getting talking to locals and getting in contact with the local bikers (and of course being invited out to eat, drink and party). All tyres were used ones they had lying around in their garages. So if you get desperate you can usually dig something up.

Just look for "Schinomontasch" ( in Kyrillik )
And if ist says "Motocycli" also, then even better

Russia in general is not a problem for motorcycle tyres as there are many bikers - therefore many bike shops and facilities. Mongolia and Uzbekistan were specifically mentioned at the start of this thread, and there are very few bikers in those places, therfore a shortage of support functions for bikers.

If you are carrying your own tyres, any car tyre changing place will be able to swap them over, in any country.

true that, could try a car shop, thanx ..although once in Thailand the car shop did not want to do it..depending on bike I guess ,but they probably just didnt know or unsure etc

You could also try FreeRider.kz or speak to Marat at Silkoffroad -motorcycle tours and rent in Central Asia

Almaty is certainly the best place to be looking in central Asia. The BMW dealer is still utterly useless though unless you want a 4x4 with tinted windows.

The both statement are true ) BMW mottorad was opened officially only few months ago. And the service not great there (rumors). Freerider have tires in stock (may be KTM as well) when other repair centers only working by preorder.
