Top recommendations for Mongolia?
Hi,
I've been in Mongolia for about a week now, and it's been good fun. Interesting country, not a lot like anywhere else I've been. For people who have been here before, can you recommend anything specific? Great 'roads', specific places that were highlights of your time here? Many thanks |
To add...
Anything non-riding to do in Mongolia? , I've been to the two national parks off roading it , I've been down to the Gobi and I'm a few 100km from UB and finding very little to do , sprung all the tourisy traps in UB already.... |
The Western part of Mongolia is the stunner...Bayan Olgi area...north of Khovd...everything else is average...
To see what I mean, check out the pics section of my website...its like nowhere else. |
I totally agree with MotoEdde. The western part is amazing.
Have fun! |
Thanks folks
I was kinda wondering if that was the case, unfortunately I've already crossed from the Russian border in the West, to Olgy, and I'm now in UB.
I think I'll probably take the (boring, all paved?) road North back into Russia, and maybe have a crack at the Road of Bones, or if this seems unrealistic, then straight to Vlad, and S.Korea. What a great position to be in! Lots of options, and few limitations. Thanks again for the replies |
Why the obsession with Magadan ? , its taiga all the way left and right , and the only reason people go to Magadan is to say they have been to Magadan as other than the mask of sorry there is absolutely nothing there.

Magadan
Right then, after wikipedia'ing Taiga, I'm a little less ignorant.
I want to try Magadan, because I want something that will be a good challenge, something that's difficult, and that I feel an achievement if I manage. Less of the holiday stuff, and more of the adventure. Sorry if I've somehow offended you with this plan. Anyhoo, are we meeting up? I emailed you, and no response. I'll be in UB for next few days if you're about here. Be good to go for a beer, and have a chat about your plans from here on.. Cheers Gabe |
I've been at the Nadeem ankle bone shooting festival , archery and wrestling final all day , and my mail box today appears to be empty, maybe tommorow or something as tonight we are planning on seeing the germans off with food and vodka (yet again), and its also doug's last day in Mongolia so we are going to see a live band tonight.

Gabe: If you haven't left yet, one of my very favorite places in Mongolia is the Amarbayscalant Monastery, a few hours north of UB, west of the road between UB and the Russian Border. It's pretty easy to get to and is a beautiful large monastery set in a lovely valley. Lots of good camping possibilities and very peaceful to sit at the monastery in the long summer evenings and listen to the monks chanting.
To get to it drive north from UB and then take the road west to Erdenet. About an hour after turning towads Erdenet there is a small sign saying Amarbayscalant pointing to a dirt track north. It's about 60-90 minutes along the dirt road, depending on how fast you ride. From UB it's 5-6 hours total to get there. It would be easy to visit there for a day or two on your way out to Russia.
