Enfield tank help please
 

Hi Guys/Girls I have a 15 litre tank on my Enfield Diesel at the moment, and I am on the lookout for the larger 22 litre one, I want a sound tank undented, but the paintwork can be in any condition as I need to weld a 'leak off' pipe to it, If anyone as one knocking about I'd be very grateful or if anyone knows where I can get one, that would be great. Thanks in anticipation.

there's a triumph/enfield dealer in Northfields (West London) called Reg Allen, who tends to have odd stuff lying around (old police spec triumphs, various tanks, etc). he's an old, awkward, kind of guy, but might be worth a try.

If you go onto the official Royal Enfield site (the UK importers one) they often have a bunch of 'seconds' and parts for sale. (A lot of it is stuff they've taken off bikes when building their specials). They might be worth a look.

Out of interest, what's the Enfield Diesel like? I've heard less than flattering reports, but having seen some of the stuff said about the petrol ones and knowing from first hand experience that they're a gas, I've taken them with a pinch of salt. Would far rather hear from someone who owns one.

Matt, when you say Enfield diesels, which engine do you mean ? Enfield rolling chassis are the best available for smallish diesels to be slotted into (with a few mods). My diesel uses the 412cc Fuji Robin, if you want more details try Classic Motorcycles Ltd on their website under 'publications' there are write-ups on the Robin, and it's the actual bike that I own, and at one time in it's life had a sidecar attached, :eek3:.

Hatz German diesel engines are also fitted into R.E chassis and cost about 5k, and in the latest 'Old Bike Mart' there is a Chinese built copy of the 406cc Yanmar featured, with prices from £2950 for the kickstart version and from £3250 for the Electric start one. The fastest thing about some bikes is there depreciation, but the fastest thing with Diesel bikes is the way sensible knowledgeable people want to speak and ask questions and show genuine interest. BTW the ultimate website for Diesel motorcycles is DieselBike.net The Original Diesel Motorcycle website. especially interesting are the pictures of the 'Ernie Dorsett' creations of which my bike is one. I am always willing to help or chat about the 'diesel' and hope this as been of some use.

Always interested in bikes that are a little different and as an Enfield owner myself your deisel obviously sounded intrigueing! Will check out your links and have a look. I absolutely agree with your 'horses for courses' comment. There seems to be a sector of the biking community (especially prevelant in the common biking press) that thinks that if it isn't fast it can't be any good, or even it seems, a 'real' motorbike!

If you are not in a hurry, and if you were intending to go to the diesel bike rally in Hamm this year. you could order one from Joachaan Sommer. and collect it from him there. He gets container loads of stuff sent over from time to time as a source for his diesel bikes, and offered to do that very thing for me at lastyears rally.

I did see them listed on one of the german websites, but cant find teh website now.
Hitcocks do an 18 litre one but not cheap

Let me know what you want and rough prices - I will head down to Karol Bagh on Saturday. I am unfortunately flying BA and will have to pay for a second check in case but I'll most likely be getting some new mudguards and other bits for my bullet and should be able to accommodate a tank.

I'm not sure if they do the 22 litre tank new. My tank was sliced in half and an extra section welded in. Is this what you are after?

I learned a splendid hindi word that seems to be most appropriate for bullets. "Juger" - means to fix something without the right tools and equipment! I might even rename my bullet.

Many many thanks to Matt Pope who got me the large 22 litre tank, hope to see him at the HU meet in July. When I collected the tank last night we were rather 'short on time', but I'd love to hear more about 2 of his overland trips. So, if you read this Matt........Thanks
