Wanted: Overland vehicle Botswana/South-Africa
Hello,
We are currently living in Gaborone and we're looking for an overland car. We have two small children, so we are looking for something quite specific: - 4x4 with a rooftop tent and enough space inside for two small children to sleep or - a 4x4 with a pop-up roof/ camper solution. Other suggestions are more than welcome! Anyone who knows how difficult/easy it is currently to buy a car in SA as a non-resident? And whether it's a problem to drive around in Botswana with a car that's registered in South Africa? We are not planning to get it registered in Botswana, since we don't know yet where we want to sell it in a couple of years. We've read several different stories but not about any recent experiences. Thanks in advance! Regards, Jeldau |
Hi Jeldau
I bought a Land Cruiser in South Africa last year. I can confirm that you won't be able to register a car as non resident. There's 2 ways to get it done. 1st. The African way.... 2nd. Officially you can register through an SA resident. Cheryl Sandmann in Cape Town offers such registrations. If you need more details you should contact her directly. But if you don't have an International ID card you'll need a TRN which is harder, but a few still manage. |
@ Ronnie: What is an International ID Card ?
I had to have a TRN which is not possible to get nowadays officially... Cheers Silvi |
Sorry, I ment National ID card.
Do a Google Pic search for "Swedish ID card" or "Dutch ID card" for example and you will see how they look. I think you must come from a country that has a personal ID number, it will not work with just a Card number. (A Swedish Personal number is unique number for you will be given to you at birth and that will never change) This is likely because your personal ID number will never change no matter how many times you change passport, drivers license or ID card. Even if it would be possible to register a car on a Card number it would not be a good idea as you will not be able to prove that you own your vehicle if you change ID card or loose it! To register with National ID card, they use code "03 Foreign ID" and no need to show passport. Is free of charge, takes 10 minutes and no need for the hard-to-get-TRN. :D |
Which office (and forms) is doing this?
|
The South African traffic department. Just tell them that you want to be registered to be able to by a car and hand over your ID and proof of address - and not your passport with a tourist visa in it...

Someone in SA who is probably quite clued up on this sort of thing is Paul Marsh, formerly of Footloose 4x4 in the UK, who now lives back in SA and has a business preparing overland vehicles very similar to what he did with Footloose.
