Compact tripod head
 

I'm looking for a compact tripod head - any suggestions?

I have a Nikon D700 with decent lenses so there is a bit of weight there but I don't use long telephotos. Generally I'm not a fan of ball heads and prefer each axis to be individually controlled - but I'm prepared to be converted if necessary! However, I definitely want a quick release plate. I don't mind the mounting thread size as adaptors are easy enough to get hold of.

There are a whole bunch around, Your best bet is too go too a good store and see what you like and go from there.

if youre on this site you most probably want compact and lightweight.

This is not ideal, but for a travel option with [up to] a 24-70 2.8 zoom lens this is a very very good compromise. However, probably not for multiple minute exposures on top of a top notch tripod, at that level you are talking about alot more weight for everything.

Thanks for your suggestions. It seems a reasonable quality head is going to be fairly pricey and a I just know that a cheap, creeping, awkward one will only annoy me! I've just invested in a travel tripod so haven't tried the new set up (new legs, old head) out properly yet. I'll do a trial run and after that - well, we'll see.
