For anyone thinking of taking a drone on a big trip, this map with rules and regulation in different countries around the world could be a good starting point for further research.

Here I did collect information about travelling with drones. About people who got fined, got to jail and the rules. It should help to be prepared.

If you are not on a worldtrip - you will need more preparation. Then the details counts too. That Equador raises a heavy fee is well known, that drones are forbidden at the Galapagos (Equador) or at Machu Picchu (Peru) - such stuff is not shown. Also that you need a (easy to optain flying licence in the EU) is not shown. Or that you are not allowed to fly in national parks in many country world wide.

Too such a map done by visualcapitaslist will outdate pretty soon, or is already outdated. But the red color shows, where you really should investigate... Up2you If you will dismantle and hide it, or dont take it with you, But you can prepare in detail.

On a worldtrip it is not possible to prepare any country that detailed! Sorry for all who think thats has to be done - we can talk after you did a >10 country and 6 months trip about. Topic like Visa, Vaccination, Insurance, POI, Route, Weather and car preparation will consume any free minute.

I'm preparing a world trip in 2023 and was debating bringing a drone as I'll be vlogging the whole thing...

But me thinks it's not worth the hassle honestly. Between the laws, the charging, the worying about it breaking down, getting stolen etc etc... I think I'll pass.

In the european union you need a licence to fly. Your drone has to be labled. Drones over 250g has to be registered.

Always better to check laws before you use a drone and never trust a website fully.

BTW:
I as a German made the drone license A1/A3 a couple a months ago because it is still free of costs im the moment and will be valid for 5 years. From 3.rd quarter of 2021 on you can convert at the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt the german drone license to global license. Will cost you about 50€ in Germany.

Not only are there country-wide drone laws, but in many of the locations where you would quite like to fly a drone, it is expressly prohibited.

Plus I've never seen a drone operator - including professional film crews - that were not experiencing constant hassles and failures.

Drones are cool toys, but I would not commit so much of my travel time to managing one.

Another french overlander got jailed in 2020 in iran because of using a drone. We Overlander should avoid to fly them there.

Specially if we do carry a passport labeled with one of those (military) actors against the 'axis of e...'

Jailed for 8 Years, 8 Months - that is pretty long term.

Surely these regs change so often ie they are always being updated, I'd rather check the specific countrys regs at the time of visiting

Thanks for sharing helpful resources. In general, the rules for transporting drones change so often in every country that it causes nervous laughter and people say different things. I remember once I went to Kyrgyzstan with an archaeological expedition, and we were allowed to bring a DJI drone, but my colleague was not allowed to bring a vape with a separately packed battery. We needed a drone to take a map of the area (no one lives there) and create a 3d plan. It turned out great, I liked flying the drone. But difficulties with transportation stop me from taking it with me.
