Photo bank / photo backup
 

I'm looking at a few photo banks to back up cards whilst on the move. What do people use for this ? I dont want to take a laptop, so looking for other options

You would need a USB hard drive and a card reader at minimum, look for one that will do it automatically. trying to back up online with full size photos can take a lot of time depending on your destination

If you only shoot jpeg, then the iPad is a useful option (64GB) if you need more capacity, you can use an external wifi harddrive.

I got a Blackberry playbook with 64GB and havent quite found the way to get RAW photos onto there directly from the camera but each day the possibilities get better.
I did manage to get photos sent from the camera onto a Google nexus 7 directly, but again only jpeg's. Currently RAW format on a tablet is not really useable.

I see the future as being driven around a tablet of some description linked to an external hard drive and a card reader. But we are not there yet.

For the price of memory cards, you might as well buy 10 x 32GB cards.

At present the best solution appears to be those netbooks and an external solidstate harddrive.

Alot depends on how much interaction you want with your images whilst travelling. If its a round the world, then the Laptop becomes your primary communication tool, and will influence your choice. If its 3 weeks then you probably dont need a laptop or to preview your photos outside of the camera.
If youre doing a couple of countries, for a month or two, then a netbook / Tablet.

if anyone comes up with a solution to put RAWs onto a Blackberry playbook, please let me know.

Why don't you store your photos in the internet? Like photobucket or so

Because your at some netcafe .. with a upload speed of 1 byte per minute... takes a while. And this is the first netcafe for one month, so you have several gigabytes ...

I used to use a memory bank but now I carry a 10" netbook with SSD memory(fixed memory, no disk). On it, you can check/watch/edit your photos and use it for internet access. You can have all the novels you like on it and all your guidebooks etc. so you actually save a lot of weight.
Its very small and weighs not more than one guide book at 1kg.

I have an EyeFi SD card in my camera, so photos are automatically transferred directly to the netbok via WiFi
