Photo Storage
 

My misses is off to India in a couple of months and is worried that she'll not have enough space on her memory chip for all her photos, so wondered what you guys use?

Just take memory chip? Lap top to up load them or some sort of media storage ?

I use a Seagate 500gb portable hard drive, with most of my stuff stored on it, Documents and all sorts of stuff, that way I can plug it into just about any computer and I've got all my bit's and bob's right infront of me.

If you're just worried about running out of space on the chip... then bring another chip card. I brought 5 compact flash cards to India for a month and used 3.

If you're also concerned about backup, download to a laptop or an external drive. In India I also used a Hyperdrive Colorspace which is a standalone backup device (no need for a laptop - pricey though). I kept this in a separate bag in case either the camera or the bag was stolen. Even though I backed up the cards, I didn't erase them so I always had 2 copies of my images.

I use a hard drive, but then again I take 3000 pics a month on avge, 10000-15000 for an average trip.

For your Mrs, I suspect what was said above will be just fine. Buy 3-4 16GB cards and all will be fine. Lightest, simplest, easiest solution.

Yeah, I thought that the best bet would be the extra cards, but she'd been thinking about taking a laptop - I'll just get out sent out to the shops for more hards lol

If you decide to go for cards only, make sure you get one of those waterproof card safes. They take SD and CF cards. Maybe take another card, to backup your top shots (in case of theft).

Extra Memory Cards & Other storage
 

As others have said take extra cards, this also means you can get real snap happy. SD/ Compact flash are cheap.

I would also copy the photos to another location, ie a little portable drive or burn to dvd and sent them home.

I had an external 500Gb drive that I was copying them to along the way. It was brand new and packed in a stubby holder with foam around it but it failed about 3/4 of the way through the trip. As I was not deleting them from the cards I lost nothing.

It was after this that I thought of the burn and send home idea. Keeping the cards and other storage medium separate is also a great idea.

Check out the Transcend Storejet 25M. It's a tiny 500gig drive a little bigger than an iPhone and has been drop tested by the US military. Has a few layers of protection. Super tough, small and quiet. Ebay has em for about $100.

Tip, If taking several cards along don't use 1 until it's full and then move on to the next. Keep changing them, say every day, then if you lose 1, have your camera stolen or it dies you haven't lost all of Egypt for example but 1 day out of 5 in Egypt.

My tips:

Backup regularly, daily is best.

Use multiple memory cards of reasonable size, ie not just one BIG memory card

Backup regularly.

Be aware that computers in internet cafes may have viruses. Some internet cafes don't allow USB devices so check first.

We picked up a USB virus that all but destroyed the miniSD card we plugged into the computer, need less to say we lost the data.

If you have a lot of data, even consider multiple backups. Spreading the backup (using physical redundancy) is the best way to reduce risk of lossing data.

Upload speed
 

The other problem with net cafes is that the upload speed is more often than not throttled massively.

It would take forever and a day to upload 1gb let alone 2, 4 or 8gb of photos.

Here's My Suggestions
 

Look at the site Luminous-Landscape.com for WAMP, "Where the *!## are my pictures". It costs a little to download the tutorial, but you will not be disappointed.

I use 2- 1TB portable drives with my laptop. After I am done shooting for the day, I use Adobe Lightroom for asset management and load the images onto both drives and keep them separate. Seems like a lot of storage space, but I only shoot raw. I also carry lots of memory cards, use them like rolls of film, and every so often FedEx them home. Might sound like overkill and kind of a pain, but I don't like losing my images.

there is a PD7X on the market, with 40 GB or more.......up to you, it works with 4 AA batteries, or external powercable,with differnet cardslots for different cards,
is uploading without PC, small, light, good option too,
