Storing Digital Imagaes
 

Is it possible to buy some kind of storage facility (like a digital jukebox) that I can stick a SD card in and download pictures.

This way I figure I only need one memory card and don't have to lug around a laptop.

Any ideas? Any recommendations?

Definitely exists - saw something the other day but was in a hurry and didn't get details. Hard drive based of course and took several different memory cards. Just plug in the card and it's automatically downloaded.

Just been away for a month with a Vosonic XS-Drive Pro VP300 (http://www.xs-drive.com/xsdrivepro/) and it performed exactly as it should. Each evening I dumped the photos from my CF card into it so I could reuse the card the next day. A full charge usually lasted about 5 downloads (400-500MB per download), and it has an auto-off feature so you don't have to watch for it to finish the transfer.

I never used the MP3 player in it, so I can't comment about the sound quality or battery life in this respect. It was kept in it's padded carry case in one of my alu panniers. I rode a mix of pretty poor tarmac and gravel roads, and it didn't fall apart under the vibration. It cost around £200 for the 40GB model, which was cheaper than almost all it's rivals.

I also had an X-drive, when running in MP3-mode the batteries lasted about 2 hours... And when coming home, I realised that one of my folders was corrupted. And it's bulky.

I hear that there's a module you can buy that you can connect to an iPod. I would definitely go for that if it was on the market when I took off on my trip.

Technology marches on. Do a search and find Archos website for the Gmini MP3 player. Dudes,20 or 40 gigs(yes darlings that's gigs) of memory for music and it has a slot built in for a Canon camera (S400 model) memory(compact flash) card (256 megs). You download direct fom the card to the MP3 player. Cost is $250US for the unit. Internal Lithium battery which when only used to download images hardly uses any power at all. Mini hard drive. Tough. Mine went to the Yukon with me this summer. If you just download your photos it uses very little power. It comes with a 120AC/5VDC step down battery charger. I made a charger that plugs into my bike 12VDC to 5VDC. listen to high quality Rock and roll music while plugged into a stereo system and shoot high res photos to your heart's content. This is the real deal. Did i mention its a little bigger than a pack of camel straights? You need to know how to operate an MP3 player to download fotos...Bill.
