Afghanistan; crossing east to west 2009/10
In 2009/10 I drove across Afghanistan from Pakistan to Iran, following the Northern Route with a diversion through Turkmenistan to avoid dangerous Badghis Province, but not miss Herat.
I posted a report just after I did it, but it has now been fully written up and forms four chapters of my illustrated online journal. Firstly, crossing the Khyber Pass, then Jalalabad, Kabul, Bamiyan, Band-e Amir Lakes, then over the Salang Pass to Mazar-e Sharif and into Uzbekistan: Stage 16 – Pakistan & Afghanistan: The Khyber Pass and Beyond [3/3] | Eurasia Overland Secondly, Returning from Uzbekistan back to Mazar-e Sharif and Balkh: Stage 17 – Uzbekistan, Afghanistan & Turkmenistan: Turkestan [1/2] | Eurasia Overland Thirdly, Leaving Mazar-e Sharif and visiting Aqcha, Sar-e Pol, Sheberghan, Maymana and Andkhoy before crossing into Turkmenistan, passing through Atamurat, Turkmenabat, Bayramaly, Merv, Mary, Iolotan to the Afghan border at Serhetabat: http://eurasiaoverland.wordpress.com/2009/12/26/17ii/ Finally, crossing to Torghuni then spending a week in Herat, before heading into Iran through Tehran, Qazvin, Rasht and Sari to the Azerbaijan border: Stage 18 – Afghanistan & Iran: Khorasan to the Caspian Sea | Eurasia Overland There are plenty of other posts pertaining to the journey. In terms of completing the writing, I am about 2.5 years into what was a 4.5 year-long journey. Daniel |
