The night was very quiet and we were some of the first up and that was after 8. It is still mostly cloudy, but there are some blue sky patches. The plan today is to ride the old Dunstan road to Naseby.

From here we backtracked on the coast road to Dunedin with a stop at Pack n save for supplies and then downtown to Vodaphone for more data. Parked here we drew quite a crowd. Now we are finally on our way at noon and we backtracked further and on the Hwy 87 to the Old Dunstan Road cut off at Clark's Junction.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4698/...09232a01_b.jpg Coming back over the hill was a much more pleasant 17 degrees today and though still windy it was much less so. We stopped at the Clark’s Junction “hotel” for a coffee and a chat with the locals. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4716/...5c521bd5_b.jpg |
The “Old” road is paved until the first settlement of farm houses after 3 km.

There is only one short steep and narrow switch back section. It is mostly over open range and the fords are mostly “bridged”. We saw only 2 other station trucks all afternoon.

The road descends from the mesa over a few switch backs to join the Styx-Paerau road. It returns to pavement 19 km before you hit the Hwy 85 again at Ranfurly and then turn onto the Naseby road.

Naseby is an historic village that has a nice small campground that was full of kiwi’s for the weekend, but no other tourists.

We also managed to catch a bit of Olympic coverage. The weather is so hard to predict here it has now changed to say showers in the am and then “will turn fine”. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4780/...d4707361_b.jpgNZ South Isand-206 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4782/...cf983315_b.jpgNZ South Isand-207 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4779/...af516cbc_b.jpgNZ South Isand-208 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
We woke to a sprinkle and packed up ASAP in a lull. We set out at 930 with a very cloudy sky and a number of very black clouds. The plan today is to ride both the Dansey's and Hakataramea pass roads and end up in Twizle after 317 km.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4619/...4d39279c_z.jpgScreen Shot 2018-02-19 at 19.24.52 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4751/...d01a5790_z.jpgScreen Shot 2018-02-23 at 23.40.53 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr We rode out of town and onto the Dansey’s pass road. This is a good gravel road and we managed to beat the black death. We did have a few showers just after we left town and we did have the rain gear on briefly. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4703/...749ee6e5_z.jpgScreen Shot 2018-02-19 at 19.22.55 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4658/...542d8767_b.jpgFILE2296 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4708/...7cf95c88_b.jpgFILE2305 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4657/...f61e2ef6_b.jpgFILE2308 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4762/...a80b51a9_b.jpgFILE2313 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
This road is very narrow in spots and we luckily only met one vehicle and it was when we had pulled onto the verge already to take some photos. There are a number of sections where I would not want to meet a car.

And… suddenly near Duntroon you meet tar seal for the next 23 km on the Hwy 83 to the Hakataramea Valley Road.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4657/...e488f60b_b.jpgFILE2420 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr Here at Duntroon we turned west and stopped for a coffee at the kiosk at the junction. We then rode the 23 Km father to Kurow where they had fuel, a 4 Square, and the sun was shining. From here we are headed off road again on the Hakataramea Valley road. It should be 90 km to Twizle. The big black rain clouds are now descending on us and it has started to rain a bit. The first 35 km of the road is paved to cattle Creek and we tried to really book it to stay ahead of the storm. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4622/...577bb276_b.jpgFILE2425 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
We are eventually going to steer out of the rains path, but not until about half way. The gravel on this road is the slightly deeper sharp and annoying to ride on kind at least until after the pass where there is more traffic and a good track to ride in. There are a number of fords before the summit and dozens of cattle stops.

It is again a pretty windy day. We got to a fork in the road and the GPS said go left 44 km to Twizle, but the road sign says No Exit! So we went right and this is 12 km to the main road Hwy 8 and is paved. This then put us 70 km from Twizle on the Highway 8 and the wind was very strong and gusting.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4701/...ceaae4a6_b.jpgScreen Shot 2018-02-23 at 23.42.40 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr We stopped in Lake Tekapo to call the campground in Twizle to see if they had a cabin for tonight as we could use a night with power. They did and it was only 15 dollars more than camping for 2. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4704/...9e36d8e7_b.jpgFILE2494 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4719/...f43596be_b.jpgIMG_2197 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4697/...a99a6699_b.jpgIMG_2201 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4795/...57e58596_b.jpgNZ South Isand-215 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4788/...95f502c1_b.jpgNZ South Isand-216 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
We stopped at Lake Pukaki for a rare we are told cloudless view of New Zealand’s highest peak Mt. Cook and then rode the last 25 km to the campground.

The cabin is tiny, but comfortable and warm and there are plenty of outlets to charge everything we have at once. We cooked up a nice pasta alfredo and tucked in to get a few episodes of Fargo viewed. It is actually freezing outside and we are glad to have our minus 15 sleeping bags and we even turned the heater on in the morning once we had to get out of said warm cocoons. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4623/...9e16c151_b.jpgIMG_2206 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
We woke to another sunny day and the plan is to ride up to Mount Cook village and then on to Geraldine.

We had lunch in the village and by 1230 it was getting very clouded over.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4606/...49e6d3a0_b.jpgFILE2589 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr On the way back down the 80 to the Highway 8 we had the wind at our backs, but on the way to lake Tekapo it was blowing us all over the road. It was lucky for Dan the last 5 km where downhill and with the wind as he had “zero km to empty”. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4758/...cbb44a38_b.jpgFILE2598 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4705/...3ea7a2f6_b.jpgFILE2605 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr We planned to head another 89 km to Geraldine and camp for the night. This is the last good weather for the rest of the week as another cyclone is scheduled to hit the north of the island in the next 2 days. The Top 10 in Geraldine is quite nice and in the center of the town. The tent sites are huge and have nice thick grass. We got some groceries and set up camp. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4744/...d445ed99_b.jpgIMG_2208 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr |
