Thanks for your very interesting and inspiring articles and beautiful pictures on the HUB. I enjoyed it very much and hope to hear more from you in the future. (I can not see you going to a 9 to 5 job after a trip like yours :smiliex: )

Yes it is a bit surreal and we are still in adjusting mode! We are taking a 6 month break from talking about what is the next adventure! St Patrick's day over green beer we will open that box! Cheers S&D

Thanks again.

Well we have a shed and woods!! Will be living in the city for a while trying to sort out our 5 year plan! Cheers. Sara

It was stating to get a bit warm at 29 again and about 70 km from Petropavl Sara noted her voltage meter (always at 14.2-14.3) was at 13.4 and dropping steadily. Finally the stator has had it. Well we managed to get to the city, drive around for 45 minutes trying to find a non by the hours hotel, and not have the bike die. I did wait in one spot while 2 of the guys rode about and finally found a nice place with a good spot to work on the bike and I managed to get there without the fan turning on and killing the bike. We let the bike cool off and then hooked up the GS 911 to confirm the issue. Dan is an expert now #7 for stator changes and 2 in the last month. It all went smoothly luckily and on start up charge is 14.2!

I know it is 4 years later now, but if you lost 7 stators already, did you discover why they are going bad?

Stators

Hi

There are several reasons. We actually in the end had 5 on each of the bikes. We are not alone in this. I know several other RTW riders with the same vintage bikes. Stock stator dies usually 50-60,000 km. After market ones last a bit longer. So 5 stators is about right for 260,000 km.

1.high ambient temperatures
2. Header location
3. Pre early 2010 model year GS the holes in the back of the generator for cooling the stator are too small. They changed this design flaw. I think I posted a photo of this at one point in the RR.

Cheers Sara

Welcome to the BIG SKY of Montana! We followed the old west trail to Ennis. This might be the perfect town for Daniel they have auto parts and ice cream in one location. We spent the day swimming and sunning at the lake. We wondered into a dive bar and were surprised to find the most delicious best rib eye ever.

Locked and loaded! We left Vancouver Island on BC ferries and then we dropped the bike at YVR at Westjet. The process was easy and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The first step is that the Falcon flies to Calgary and then it joins Trevor’s bike on the plane there and we meet them in Paris!

We can’t say enough about the great service we had from Carrie at Motorcycle Express. The bikes arrived at the freight forwarding office less than an hour from landing. The customs process was straightforward and the logistics brokerage cost was less than expected at 150E.

Unfortunately the weather has changed and we chose to book it south to Bilbao on the toll road in France. We made it 659 km in some pretty heavy rain before giving up.

Luckily we woke to dry weather and made it on time to meet our friends from Greece who are picking up their rental from IMT.

We met up with Petros and Fotini and picked up their bike from MRT. We are just missing the Swede now! He left on the ferry to Germany 2 days ago. Today he did 800 km to Orleans before he had had enough of the weather. We had stayed a day in Bilbao to sightsee and let him catch up. This is a very beautiful city and the centrepiece is the stunning Guggenheim museum .

There is a severe wind warning today and they were not kidding. This was not Patagonia wind, but it was pretty strong and gusty. We only planned for about 360 km, but after some heavy rain and the wind we decided to cut off the route to Burgos to 265 km by turning right out of the mountains towards the less ominous sky. We rented an apartment in the old city, but it had elevators to access the parking garage !
