We went for a drive along the waterfront where the surf must really come up as there is sand on the roadway at least 500 m from the sea.

The big reason Sara had wanted to come here was that a few years ago on TV she saw a documentary that included a piece on Laguna and how the dolphins here help the local fisherman to catch fish. They herd the fish towards them and then jump up to signal the men to throw their nets.

We then drove around the old historic part of town and up to the Mirante of Gloria to get a panoramic view of the city.

Dan has found a new favorite in the Crepe suiza. This is a crepe on a stick. The center has meat and cheese and the sides have cheese or chocolate.

Florianopolis
Today we had a 150 km drive north to the island of Florianopolis. We took the long way past the Lagoon, where Daniel plans to get in a bit of kite surfing. Then we headed to the north coast where we had a place 40 m from the beach with a great view.

We were invited to the home of Jean who we met in Bom Jardim de Serra for a seafood feast. He made octopus, grilled langosta, and grilled fish. We had a great time with his friends and family.

We headed over to the famous Jurere beach to spend the day. There are a lot of bathing beauties here and a lot of exposed skin.

Blumenau
We were parked out on the street in front of the hotel and a guy walks up to Dan and says in perfect English “ I saw you on Instagram!” Since we don’t have Instagram we did not believe hi, and what are the chances anyway, but he was correct since it was the kite surf shop on Florianopolis who had posted it!

Rous
The largest rodent in the world can be found here. The capybaras are related to the Ginea pig, which is up to 4.5 ft long, 2 ft hight and 110 lb. They reminded us of the ROUS from the Princess bride.

Morretes
It is HOT here and humid. It is only pleasant out at 8 am and after dusk. We are so glad we went with light colored suits and helmets for this exact reason. Today while riding it hit 38 plus the humidity. We headed out of Blumenau and north to Morretes in 225 km. This involved a short stint on the 101, but mostly on the secondary roads.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/...65f543f7_o.pngScreen Shot 2014-12-03 at 9.01.57 PM by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr There was also a short ferry ride, which offered quite a nice breeze! The ferry loaded from the side and so it was roll on roll off for sure. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8650/...43794baa_o.pngScreen Shot 2014-12-03 at 9.02.25 PM by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/...5675c94b_c.jpgFILE3231 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8670/...e0a519be_c.jpgFILE3284 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8653/...59aa44ef_c.jpgFILE3288 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8673/...5c4da42b_c.jpgmorretes 6 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8609/...310b760b_c.jpgmorretes 7 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8570/...d3b93c17_c.jpgmorretes 3 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8588/...16508e32_c.jpgmorretes 5 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/...eef39caa_c.jpgmorretes 15 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |
Arriving in the town or Morretes we were very hot and while I was looking for a hotel, Dan was chatting to some locals who also have an 800 GS. We settled for the place on the river, mostly because it was the cheapest and had air con. We were practically melting by now.

So we did that and wow is it so much nicer and cooler today at 17 (94% humidity). We decided to do a little canoe float down the now very full river. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8592/...731e466e_c.jpgFILE3356 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7486/...eec6edba_c.jpgFILE3363 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7491/...d1745252_c.jpgFILE3374 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8640/...b9414a2b_c.jpgFILE3502 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7523/...598b4cb7_c.jpgFILE3530 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/...faa0a877_c.jpgFILE3535 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/...fd2582bb_c.jpgFILE3787 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |

Ha I remember watching the very same documentary. We had a similar experience re: the included breakfast with our first hotel in Mexico last weekend. We're used to the anemic "continental" breakfasts in Canada and the US, our hotel in Hermosillo had a smorgasbord of yummy dishes lined up on the morning. It was quite the contrast. |
