Guarapari
Well we finally have to leave our home at Paulo’s in Itacoatiara and head north. Our visa runs out February 16, and we have a lot of ground to cover. We have changed out plans and instead of driving the extra 3200 km from Salvador de Bahia to Fortaleza and then Brasilia, we will drive to Bahia and then Brasilia and fly from Brasilia to Fortaleza and Manaus. This allows us time for 13 days in Cumbuco the number one kite surf location in the world and 5 days to go to Manaus for an Amazon boat trip.

This is in 34 plus heat on 2 lane roads, with an amazing amount of truck traffic = slow going and long hot days. So glad we are flying some of the north now. Today we are making for Guarapari in 471 km. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8628/...802da08b_c.jpgScreen Shot 2015-01-07 at 10.02.02 PM by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |
Guarapari
We left from Paulo’s house with instructions and the best route to take to avoid the city and the terrible traffic. Our ultimate goal was the highway 101, but we took the 106 and then cut up on the Ubatiba road at Marica. Driving along the 106 we were speeding a bit, but so was everyone else. These 2 Policemen on motos came up behind us and passed us. About a km later they suddenly flipped on their lights and signaled us to get over. The funny part was they almost clanged into each other and then into the car passing in the right lane while trying to do this. Long story short the reason they pulled us over was to ask where we were going and to tell us that this was not the 101! They thought we were lost. I assured them by showing them our route on the GPS to show that we were turning in 9 km to go to the 101 on the small local road with no traffic.

We left Paulo’s at 830 and arrived in Guarapari after 471 km at 530 hot and tired. The town is very nice and is on the ocean and our hotel was on the canal.

Teixeira de Freitas
Today is just about getting north as far as we can stand in the heat and with the amazing truck traffic. We aimed for Teixeira de Freitas in 418 km. We experienced the moto lane at the tollbooth, which actually seems slower and a pretty tight squeeze. There are so many moto clubs here in Brazil. When you get gas often the attendant will ask you for a sticker for their collection. We made good time and arrived in time to enjoy the pool at a Posada we found right on the 101.

Porto Seguro
We did not have far to go today at only 230 km to Porto Seguro, but it still took almost 4 hours due to rain and long lines of trucks to pass. We did get lucky a few times with road repairs and were able to get to the front of the long lines before the traffic was allowed to go in our direction.

"Discovery of Brazil" 1500
When it finally cooled off at about 6 we could ride up to the historic center. In 1500 Pedro Cabral landed just 16km north of Porto Seguro at Coroa Vermelha and this is said to be the first Portuguese landfall in “Brazil”. They just stocked up on supplies and left. Three years later Gonçalvo Coelho arrived and his men planted a marker in what is now Porto Seguro’s Cidade Histórica.

Itacare the back way
Today it was 374 km to Itacare, but on the back route. You know those days when your GPS says go right, but the map says there is a road north to the left, sometimes it does work out. We headed left and north despite the “make a U turn” on the GPS and the guy at the gas station telling us to go right.

Itacare the back way
The road on the map was north and west from Santa Cruz, but when we got to the edge of the town there were no route signs at the round about. The GPS was no help and neither was the English-speaking guy who stopped to ask us if we needed help. There were 3 roads bricked coming off the round about. The left looked like an alley, the middle looked major and went up the hill to the city hall or so the sign said, and the last looked major, but seemed to head more north than we wanted to go. Picking the middle we drove around the dirt roads in what looked to be a subdivision, and then backtracked to the “alley”, which it turns out actually becomes the “highway” BA 683. This is bricked initially, and then paved for a few KM before it is packed sand and for us raining, but you are soon back on the pavement.

Here we just stuck to what looked like the most main dirt road and finally we came to a roundabout with a sign and headed for Itapebi and the 101. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7531/...86fd8750_c.jpgitacare 6 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8620/...5a6f77bf_c.jpgitacare 8 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8633/...24f03274_c.jpgitacare 9 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |
Itacare the back way
We had some intermittent showers to cool us down, but when we got to the coast it was sunny. We left the 101 traffic and went east on the 251 to Ilheus and then north on the 001 to Itacare.

There are however many pristine beaches if you get off the beaten track. This was just a reasonable stopping spot for us on the way to Salvador. To really enjoy it here you would need to stay 4 or 5 day. Many of the nice beaches are 70 plus km off the road. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8568/...f22abe03_c.jpgitacare 13 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7502/...83f59e70_c.jpgitacare 14 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7469/...475405a5_c.jpgitacare 15 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7486/...c805429e_c.jpgitacare 17 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7544/...6eeeeda8_c.jpgitacare 18 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/...ce7ec354_c.jpgitacare 12 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7474/...6702f0f1_c.jpgitacare 19 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |
Salvador
We got up today to pouring rain despite it being bright and sunny outside, only in Brazil. But unlike Vancouver where this would last for days here it usually lasts less than 30 minutes.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/...a40216f2_c.jpgDSC07230 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr We planned to go up the coast to the “ferry boat” to Salvador. This is 225 km, but we were told it would take 4-5 hours and it did. This was a combination of traffic, poor road conditions, towns with cobbled streets and lots of speed bumps. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7551/...b607fab7_o.pngScreen Shot 2015-01-20 at 5.14.23 PM by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7543/...3af8fe27_c.jpgSalvador 2 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7529/...20001103_c.jpgSalvador 12 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr |
Salvador
One delay was where a bridge was washed out. There was a diversion, but in the northbound section someone had not made it with a tractor-trailer and he had just dropped the trailer. This was an issue for the busses trying to get past. The issue for us was that the southbound lane of the detour was pretty steep and muddy and the drivers did not want to go that way. The route was one lane but cars from both directions were causing a jam. Finally the bus drivers got out and started direction traffic and we finally got moving.
