Another cup of coffee drunk while I ride along with you Jan :thumbup1:
How much you're affected by cross winds does seem to depend on how different bikes are designed. Something with a high centre of gravity seems to get blown around by the slightest gust whereas low gravity bikes react much less. I've had two GoldWings and they hardly notice cross winds strong enough to blow you off your feet. I'd have thought your 1200GS would have carried its weight low and therefore not be affected much but I've never owned one so I don't know. |
It was not to bad on my 1200GS or my R850R. My sons F650GS Dakar was affected more by the wind.
A long time ago I had a Harley FLH1200 Electra Glide that was hardly affected by the wind and on my GoldWings (1200 and 1500) it was not to bad either https://www.krijtenburg.nl/bikes/hd1200b.png |
I did wonder whether your son's bike would be the one most sensitive to side winds. It does look like it has a higher centre of gravity than the 1200. For me the worst bike I've ever owned for side wind sensitivity was the Honda CX650 Turbo that I had in the 80's /90's. That was a two lanes of the motorway to keep it in a straight line sort of bike. My XR600 came a close second though and if you look at them both in the pictures below it's not hard to see why. Compare all that bodywork up high with our current 1800 Wing in the B/W picture and you can see why it's so stable - all the heavy bits are only a few inches off the ground (just as well really as it would be unrideable otherwise)

A new Friday video on the Motormobilist channel.
The weather was nice and rain was predicted for the next days so I went for a nice Motormobilist ride along the Kreekraksluizen, through an orange decorated village Waarde, along the Westerscheldedijk and to Motorservice Ossendrecht. (In Dutch with English subtitles) |
This Friday another Motorist solo ride. A ride in the neighborhood on my BMW R1200GS.
A few country roads, a few dirt roads and just a nice ride through the beautiful surroundings we live in. |
A new Motormobilist video for this Friday.
We, my son Vincent and I, made a motorcycle ride from Hoogerheide to Willemstad. The video was recorded from my BMW R850R and Vincent is riding his BMW f650GS Dakar in front of me. The ride goes through Bergen op Zoom, Moerstraten, Steenbergen and Dinteloord. You will see the ride at double speed. (The video was edited by Vincent) |
This Friday video is about a tour on my BMW R1200GS, from a terrace in Nispen, where I had a nice cup of coffee, via the touristic route to Hoogerheide.
In the video I show little maps, showing my route. The video is in Dutch with English subtitles. |
