Passing and Time.
One penalty for surviving is that one must watch and sometimes share in others not surviving. I have had several friends that 'knew their time was coming'. The courage of Patrick and the the recent very human drama of John and Cheryl have been enriching in a gut wrenching way. Friends from Birmingham and from 30 years ago in LA will recognize the names. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate135.jpg
The volcano south of town as seen on the walk to the gym. Not cold at all, even though it looks it in this foto. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate413.jpg While I likely have another 15 or 20 years of more vigorous living left, you never really know. I probably should make this ride count. I'm thinking the Andes are second only to the Himalayas and the roads are better.... |
Hanging out in Antigua
I got a haircut for q20 ($2.60us) and this woman fondled my face....took her time....never happened before.... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate013.jpg
These guys took a couple of extra days and did a substandard job on the kawa seat. Been planing to recover it since Birmingham. $20us http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate014.jpg The hubb of activity is the park in the center of town. It is well used by locals, touristas and the church. Center of the park is a fountain with a scowling mermaid.....that defies.... something. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate073.jpg |
The faiths
I went running to see what the comotion was about and found this progression on a back street entering one of eight local Catholic churches
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate023.jpg I was bemused at this blending of old and not very regal, noisy new. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate026.jpg One suspects that these guys will take some of the 'maybe manana' right out of the culture and try to bring about some strident changes http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate012.jpg |
A real race track!!! About 20 miles away!!!!
From the scoring tower, at start/finish line, at mid track...
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate037.jpg Looking to the right at the first half http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate040.jpg Looking to the left at the second half...They went counter clockwise this day. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate039.jpg Arrogant little ***** of tomorrow... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate049.jpg |
A couple of the haunts
Walking in the front door of a favored restaurant
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate061.jpg A little father in... Breakfast q15 and lunch q20 ($1.95 &$2.60us) http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate058.jpg From inside the gym... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate067.jpg My spanish teacher, Jenri (henery) and a $3.00 lunch. He is a much better teacher than I am a student... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate074.jpg |
Another big ride...
The Volcano Pacaya , just south of Antigua, from about 70 kilos (42miles) away, on the Pacific http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate111.jpg
Disrepair in the harbor http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate107.jpg a room for q100 ($13us) and... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate126.jpg a sandy trail to the water. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate121.jpg |
Multi-tasking....
This charming young woman was nursing her baby as she aggressively sold me a couple of t-shirts. Has four kids and one suspects another four on the way. Refused a picture until I agreed to pay q10 ($1.30). Still did not like it... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate147.jpg
This woman also refused me a picture until her friend huranged the price up over $2.00. She did not like it much either. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate159.jpg This woman, from Japan, has made eight trips to China to see friends, rode the train across Russia with a couple of friends, toured the USA ...was traveling alone... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate153.jpg |
Guatemala City with Alex
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate183.jpg
Downtown... Famous landmark... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate175.jpg Never seen quite this before http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate191.jpg Alex found a friend....Turns out their march was about aids awareness. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate212.jpg These two did not want their picture taken either, until I told them, in spanish, how pretty they were.http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate192.jpg |
Antigua sport bikes in spanish
This guy cooked to order for a dozen hungry bikers standing in line and did an great job. Pricey but great.http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate233.jpg
On the south side of Antigua at Joe's http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate234.jpg The guy on the right had breakfast with me and found me interesting until I said nice things about Mexico.... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate232.jpg A vintage 'deek' is part of the permanant decor http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate226.jpg Attire was mostly roadrace/sport bike leather but for this guy that went geto sheek http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate229.jpg |
Great report once again.
Are you sure those"girls" are girls?Still its all interesting to me.:D

Around town...
This father and two sons came cruising by the park in the center of town riding newish, high tech trails bikes. Nice outing, no issues. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate169.jpg
Occasionally, among the peasant rides, you can spot the ohh, so charming goose .... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate333.jpg ...and the delightful duck. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate335.jpg During the war, everyone on a two wheeler was required to have their registration numbers on their helmet or on a vest, to better id them. Assassins would ride passenger and apparently, they were hard to catch on their little 125's. Kinda gives the whole 'bad boys on bikes' a different ring .... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate288.jpg |
Interesting bit of history.
Great photo's as always.:D

The venders got set up for the big....
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate354.jpg Burn the Devil event... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate379.jpg that had to be done before the Virgin appeared the next day. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate364.jpg Seems that this is a pagan 'city cleansing' that was adopted by the Catholic church and serves most everybody very well. http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate371.jpg |
The Devil gets burnt, apparently.
Massive event...
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate390.jpg Selling battery powered horns... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate393.jpg I have no idea. They are at the park, center of town and in front of the main church.http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate406.jpg |
Some locals
Several woman at the public laundry, a few blocks from the central city park
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate343.jpg Water is scooped up from the main reservoir and clothes are scrubbed in the individual sinks. The water drains back to the main supply. Built in 1650(?) http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate337.jpg rare... http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate401.jpg not so much http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...zeGuate400.jpg |
