Riding Down Under again in Australia
Hello!
I am back in Australia for a second trip this year, in a different season. Spring is just gorgeous so far! I arrived in Melbourne on Nov 7 and the first month has been so busy that I am just starting my blog now. This time, I am on my own. My dear companion has stayed home for the winter as it seems he prefers shoveling snow! Ha! Ha! Riding solo means everything relies on your shoulders, many good things happen as you get to meet a lot more people, you gain more confidence day after day and you really enjoy being free as a bird!! But there are also times when I feel a few butterflies in my stomach, especially when I am in remote places, going on small gravel roads for example, not knowing if I will be able to turn around at some point or what if I drop the bike?? But, I certainly try to stay out of trouble!! ;-) Claire https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4645/...282f2fa9_k.jpgDSC_0177_mod |
Day 1 - Melbourne to Walhalla
I started my trip my exploring the area around Dandenong Ranges as I had a few days to get familiar again on my GS650 before heading to the Snowy Mtns Travellers Meeting in Jindabyne.
This is a great place to ride, lots of curves in a beautiful surrounding! I ended up in Walhalla, in a steep valley where 3500 people lived during the gold rush. A very interesting and unique place! It is now almost a ghost town but very pretty as many buildings were restored. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4570/...84c0e429_k.jpgCarte J1A 12 nov - Yarra Jct https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4584/...94307c12_b.jpgCarte J1B - Warburton à Walhalla Along Mountain Hwy https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4519/...7aaca4b9_k.jpgDSC_0002 Lunch break in Warburton https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4576/...506c3535_k.jpgVid 2384 Near Three Bridges, on my way to Moe https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4555/...fedebbab_k.jpgVid 2386 Near Mount Baw Baw, C426 https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4521/...3c59cfa1_k.jpgVid 2390 https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4524/...021d960b_k.jpgVid 2389B Over the Dam https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4576/...b954c1b4_z.jpgVid 2391 Walhalla https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4575/...c005e15b_k.jpgDSC_0018 Fire Station hanging over the river https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4555/...d5075028_k.jpgDSC_0019 Walhalla built in a very narrow valley https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4529/...0007b2cd_k.jpgDSC_0020 Walhalla Cemetery where everyone is buried on a very steep slope https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4576/...152b6825_k.jpgDSC_0028 https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4552/...03e7301f_k.jpgDSC_0029 Free campsite in Walhalla in a beautiful and quiet surrounding https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4572/...0f794d3e_k.jpgIMG_20171112_190343837 |
Day 2 and 3 – Walhalla to Bombala
The following day, I left Walhalla heading south on the C481 and then east towards Orbost where starts the Bonang Hwy going north. I stopped in Goongerah for the night in another free campsite along Elliry Creek. That’s where I saw my first live wombat! :D
Day 3 is a short day to get to Bombala although there was a 12-km long section on gravel between Googerah and Delegate that I took easily as it was well packed and hard except for a short section under construction that was rather slippery and yucky. In Bombala, I had time to relax, get some groceries, charge my equipment and enjoy a great shower!. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4531/...b3fbed3c_h.jpgCarte J2 et J3 - Walhalla à Bombala Elliry Creek Campsite, Goongerah https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4563/...3a849b05_k.jpgVid 2405 Well Packed Gravel Section on Bonang Hwy https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4540/...50963864_k.jpgVid 2407 Huge Logging Trucks along the Way https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/...b3e86d59_z.jpgVid 2410 |
Day 4 – Bombala to Cann River, Pambula Beach and Cooma
Day 4, I leave Bombala heading south on Monaro Hwy to Cann River and then northeast on Princes Hwy to see Eden and Pambula Beach. From there, I take Mount Darragh Rd back to Bombala and then head towards Cooma to spend the night camping 20 km up north, not far from Monaro Hwy.

Snowy Mountains Travellers Meeting in Jindabyne - Nov 16 to 19
I spent a marvelous weekend at the HU Meeting in Jindabyne. It was a great opportunity to meet many other riders and travellers, as well as hear interesting stories from various presenters.
I really enjoyed it! It was only my second experience attending a HU Meeting and was way worth it! Activities and organization overall was just GREAT! I made a lot of new friends too, some of them who I expect to visit us in Quebec soon! :mchappy: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4523/...a556a43d_h.jpgCarte J5 16 nov - Cooma à Jindabyne Main Dining Hall, Sport & Recreation Centre in Jindabyne https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4582/...8bea90e0_k.jpgIMG_20171119_112827143_HDR |

Hiking along Cape to Cape Track, WA
Hello,
This is not about motorcycle riding but I thought I should share this as well. I took a break from riding and flew to Perth in order to start a long 8-day hike along Meelup Trail and along the coast, from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin. Hiking the Cape to Cape Track was a tremendous adventure, a bit challenging but well worth it! There are two videos, the first one covers the northern sector down to Margaret River Mouth and the second one the southern sector. The second video shows a lot more amazing natural features. Where I have commented, subtitles have been added in English for the benefit of people who do not understand French. To see it full screen, just click on 'YouTube' at the bottom of each image. You will be redirected to YouTube and have access to the Full Screen mode. Enjoy! Claire |
Tasmania, here I come!
I arrived in Tasmania on an early morning about three weeks ago and have enjoyed every moment of it! It's a fantastic place to ride and has lots of unique natural features as well!
This first episode is about my journey from Melbourne to Devonport and then exploring the Northeast section of Tasmania as shown on the map below. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4633/...530c59f1_k.jpg The video is 15 minutes long. Episode 8 - Bruny Island
I spent four wonderful days on Bruny Island. There’s lots to see over there and I found some very nice campgrounds and hiking tracks. The most spectacular moment, that was unfortunately not captured on camera, is the evening activity with a ranger at the Neck Lookout. You get to see thousands of birds, the short-tailed shearwaters as well as penguins coming on shore to their nest. An unique and awesome experience!

Episode 9 - Cockle Creek
I spent two days at Cockel Creek Campground located in Southwest Nat’l Park. This is Australia’s Southernmost Road and there’s an easy hike that brings you to South Cape Bay which offers extraordinary scenery.
On my way back up North, I had a look at the Tahune Air Walk, an interesting experience. The road getting there was awesome! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4668/...2b8488fc_b.jpgCarte T7 - Cockle Creek The video is divided in two parts, first one is 14 minutes and the second part is 9 minutes long. Episode 10 - Mount Field Nat'l Park
Based on what's indicated in the Motorcycle Atlas, you can get directly from Grove to New Norfolk by taking a gravel road, a section between Crabtree and Lachlan (Ride #166).
I sort of easily found Mitchells Road which becomes Jeffreys Track, but it looks much more like a track than a road… and is well indicated as 4WD only. Although this stretch was about 14 km, I decided to turn back. Too bad but when you're on your own, especially on a very warm day with not enough water anyway, I think this was a wise decision... :innocent: So, I took the long way up to Mount Field Nat'l Park, which was a very pleasant ride. I spent a few days over there. You will see in the video that I went hiking the Lady Barron Falls Circuit. A lovely place! Then I went riding up the gravel section of Lake Dobson Road (16 km, very narrow and twisty!) and enjoyed the Pandani Grove Track along Dobson Lake. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4767/...3d781512_z.jpgCarte T8 - Mount Field The video is 16 minutes long. |
Episode 11 - Gordon Dam
During my stay at Mount Field Nat'l Park Campground, I took the opportunity to ride along Gordon River Road all the way to see the beautiful Gordon Dam. The scenery on the way through the mountains is awesome!
Gordon Dam is a major gated double curvature concrete arch dam with a controlled spillway, and its operation started in 1978. It is the tallest dam in Tasmania and quite an extraordinary engineering work. Very impressive to walk on the dam! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4611/...7b175323_b.jpgCarte T9 - Gordon Dam The video is 20 minutes long. Greetings from Huntsville Ontario
What a great trip!!! I am in the planning process for a 90 day ride around Australia on my personal motorcycle. I am having difficulty in finding an insurance company that provides non resident insurance for a personal vehicle. What did you do for your motorcycle insurance? I have shipped the motorcycle to Europe twice and the insurance coverage is the "Green Card". Is there anything similar in Australia?
Thanks Wilf McQuinn Huntsville Ontario |
Motorcycle Insurance in Australia
Hi Wilf!
Try Swann Motorcycle Insurance Australia, however I do have a temporary home address in Melbourne. If you need to find a 'friend' to borrow an address, contact the HU Community in the city where you will be landing. https://www.swanninsurance.com.au/ 90 days is not enough to see it all, but it's a good start! :mchappy: Cheers, Claire |
Episode 12 - Lake St Clair
I left Mount Field National Park on a cloudy day and decided to go east for 10 km to Hamilton in order to get some fuel and groceries. Could not find anything in that small town… Luckily the next town west (Ouse) had everything I needed!
Rain started just before getting to Tarraleah. You can see on the map below the layout of the road to get down the ravin along the Nive River and back up is quite twisty. I stopped at the power station and had a look at its long steel pipes and huge chimneys. The water drops 290m to the power station that was opened in 1938. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4619/...60b55bee_z.jpgTarraleah Next stop was at 'The Wall' to see the incredible art work of the sculptor Greg Duncan. There are one hundred panels of huon pin, 3m high by 1m wide in the exhibit. Fascinating experience, which could not be recorded on film. I was so impressed with his work, I spent more than an hour looking around this place! The sky cleared up as I was setting up my tent at the Lake St Clair Lodge Campground. It was quite cold that evening and unfortunately, the kitchen shelter has openings on all sides… But it was worth it as I enjoyed an amazing hike the following day up to Mount Rufus.] https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4759/...1d8da5f1_h.jpgCarte T10 - Lake St Clair The video is 22 minutes long and ends at Nelson Falls, on my way to Queenstown. Episode 13 - Queenstown
I spent four days in the best Caravan Park I have seen so far, right here in Queenstown. It's under new management and the couple who runs it are doing an amazing job! Top first class!
Queenstown's area seems to get more rain than elsewhere. Clouds would come in and go with a few showers. From there, I did a few day trips and one of them was towards Strahan et Zeehan, a lovely area with lots of curves on the way. Travelling in Australia is always full of surprises. You never know who you will meet during the day or what you will see. During my visit to Macquarie Heads, I made a new friend on the beach and he took me for a ride on his quad up the hill where he said I could take better pictures… https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4676/...85635823_h.jpgCarte T11 - Queenstown The video is 30 minutes long. Episode 14 - Walls of Jerusalem
During my travel in Tasmania I did quite a lot of hiking, usually half-a-day walks selected from the '60 Great Short Walk'. I heard about the Walls of Jerusalem and its spectacular landscape, and thought it might be less crowded than Cradle Mountain. A good opportunity for an overnight hike!
I left Queenstown and followed the road shown on the map below to Mole Creek in order to get supplies as well as the detailed map of Walls of Jerusalem Nat'l Park. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4740/...6ed0db02_z.jpgCarte T12 - Walls of Jerusalem https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4650/...77f09ccb_z.jpgCarte T13 - Burnie et Boat Harbour The first 2.6 km going up the track is steep and a bit difficult carrying my big backpack. It took me 3½ hours to get to the campsite. I can't believe anyone can get there in two hours as indicated on the map!!! I camped two nights at Wild Dog Creek Campsite which gave me the opportunity to get to the top of Mount Jerusalem, 11.6 km from the car park. The weather was perfect for this activity and I was really impressed with the scenery. Have a look! Episode 15 - North West and Tarkine Region
Boat Harbour Beach was my base for a whole week and the weather was absolutely perfect to spend some time on the beach. From there, I could have daily rides to the surrounding attractions.
You will see in Part 1, my visit to the Nut in Stanley as well as another ride to see the Big Tree and Dip Falls, which is an unique 34m high cascade waterfall over cubic-basalt formed rocks. In Part 2, you will see that I went to Marrawah, took Green Point Road to Marrawah Beach, had a look at Arthur River as well as the 'Edge of the World'. I came back riding on the Tarkine Drive through multiple Rainforest Reserves where you find many tall eucalypts. Trowutta Arch is another stunning and natural geological structure. A very pleasant ride on a very warm day! Episode 16 - Leven Canyon
After an incredible week spent in Boat Harbour Beach, I rode through Penguin and then to Riana, on my way to Leven Canyon. I hiked the Floor Track first and was quite impressed with the scenery along the river with its high cliffs. The second day, I did the Lookout Track that takes you 275m above the Canyon. A nice 45min hike with 697 steps going down.
From there I rode back North to Ulverstone, went through the town of Forth and spent a night along Barrington Lake before heading to Latrobe, then back South to Quamby Corner, near Deloraine. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4715/...4dac9abe_z.jpgCarte T17 - Leven Canyon The video is 20 minutes long. Episode 17 - The Great Lake
I delayed my ride in the Highlands due to cold temperature in this area at one point, but I picked a very nice day on a Sunday for it. You will see in the video that it's quite a climb with lots of curves to get to the Central Plateau and the view on the Great Lake is very beautiful!
You will notice gravel on some sections of the road, but the worst part was certainly the section under construction with a thick layer of gravel. At that point, I was thinking of turning back but I have no idea how I could have managed a U-Turn on such loose gravel. I wasn't surprised to see a crashed car on the side at that moment… It was interesting to have a look at Miena Dam, completed in 1922. It is an unique structure, a multiple Arch Buttress Concrete Dam, designed to minimize the amount of concrete required. Taking Poatina Road back North was a very pleasant ride, lots of curves, in particular in the area with hairpins (see enlarged map below), as you get closer to the Power Station and its big pipes going down the mountain. The video is 20 minutes long, and ends in the lovely town of Deloraine. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4629/...f95d439a_z.jpgCarte T18 - Great Lake Hairpins just before getting to Poatina https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4741/...f6a83edc_z.jpgPoatina The Great Lake https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4758/...bc6105d5_z.jpgDSC_0757 |
Episode 18 - Oatlands and Richmond
This episode starts at the Quamby Corner Caravan Park where I spent five nights and which offers very nice facilities, in a quiet and beautiful surrounding just beside the Quamby Bluff. First, I rode to Westbury and Launceston to get a new cell phone before heading south to Campbell Town, but going through Longford and then on backcountry roads which offer nice views on the Western Tiers.
I reached the Midland Hwy in order to get to Oatlands and had a look at the great Callington Mill built in 1837 and that is still operating. The town of Oatlands presents many historic sandstone buildings in an authentic colonial character. On my way to Hobart for the weekend, I took an interesting country road: Mud Walls Road, and went through the beautiful town of Richmond. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4714/...9352bc29_z.jpgCarte T19 The video is 25 minutes long. Episode 19 – Maria Island
After attending the Salamanca Market Saturday morning in Hobart, I crossed the Tasman Bridge and headed on East Derwent Hwy, crossing the town of Richmond again. It was a very windy day with strong crosswinds on Brinktrop Road as well as on Tasman Highway. I reached Triabunna just in time to catch the last ferry of the day to Maria Island. I had less than an hour to prepare my backpack with all essential things (camping gear and food) for a three day visit on the island. Heavy rain was coming our way, therefore the crossing that afternoon was at times, very rough.
My stay on Maria Island was just incredible, well worth it! Beautiful scenery around Darlington Bay and Darlington Township, spectacular walks to Fossil Cliffs as well as to the amazing Painted Cliffs; meeting lots of wildlife on the way, such as Cape Barren Geese, Wombats (so cute!!!), Pademelons, Foster Kangaroos, etc. The highlight of my stay on Maria Island was certainly viewing a couple of Tasmanian Devils near a creek at dusk, just unbelievable! One was heading my way and suddenly stopped as he saw me, which gave me a second to capture that incredible moment. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4788/...c157c9a2_z.jpgCarte T20 - Maria Island The video is 25 minutes long. Episode 20 – East Coast back to Launceston
This episode starts at Mayfield Bay Conservation Area where you will see the Three Arch Bridge built by convicts in 1845 next to a beautiful beach. Tasman Highway North took me through Swansea and to Devil’s Corner Tower to experience great views on the Lagoon and Coles Bay as well as on the surrounding vineyards.
Riding on the Elephant Pass to St Marys was very pleasant (one of the few twisty roads I had missed so far…) and I enjoyed going through St Marys pass again on my way to St Helens. Going West on Tasman Highway, I made a short stop at Weldborough Pass to stretch my legs and see the rainforest. I went through the town of Derby, well known by mountains bikers. Then I headed towards Scottsdale to meet motorcycle friends at the Northeast Park campground where I had stayed before in December, and we rode together to Launceston on the next morning, unfortunately on a very windy and rainy day. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4782/...1f2c7545_z.jpgCarte T21 The video is 16 minutes long. |
Episode 21 - The Overland Track
Tasmania is a great place for people whose passions are riding motorcycle as well as hiking. One of the major highlight of my trip in Tasmania was certainly hiking the Overland Track, an extraordinary journey through the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area which I will never forget!
I was fortunate to do this great hike with a friend Richard, met at the HU Meeting in Jindabyne last November. With all the side trips done during this walk, we covered a total distance of more than 90km over a period of seven days, while carrying our camping gear and food for the whole journey. Overall, the video presents a good overview of what we experienced: the different terrain, natural surface or hardened with a variety of boarding or planking, huts, shelters and campsites, varied vegetation and wildlife, as well as incredible landscapes and views. The video is presented in two parts. Part I includes a short walk around Dove Lake on the day of our arrival at Cradle Mountain, as well as some views of our stay at the Waldheim Cabins before starting the Overland Track. The first day on the track, getting to Waterfall Valley was very difficult due to the weather, very windy and cold on exposed sections especially before reaching the Kitchen Hut. For the first time of my life, I realized what being exposed to a high risk of hypothermia really means… In part II, you will see a lot more sunshine, blue sky and great views, especially on a side trip to Mount Ossa as well as to a few waterfalls. Our last night was spent at Echo Point along Lake St Clair, enjoying incredible sunset as well as fog lifting up slowly the following morning. Episode 22 - Waratah and Hellyer Gorge
Most of our last two days in Tasmania were under lots of clouds and rain but we still enjoyed a ride west to Waratah and then through the Hellyer Gorge with its spectacular rainforest valley, a nice road with lots of curves!

Incredible People Met
Travelling by myself was a great adventure, and certainly a great opportunity to meet lots of people. Some of them I spent only a few hours with, others a few days but all had so much to share with me.
This is a tribute to all the lovely people I met during my trip and who have made a big difference in the overall experience! I have not filmed all of them but have great memories forever. I am so grateful, thank you! |
