Update Friday February 10, 2017
Hello!
We are currently in Chaslands, Otago. Here's the map showing our itinerary since we started our trip on January 30th; we have ridden about 2000 km up to now. The rain kept us inside today so we were able to post some of our pictures and we have prepared some videos, however since we are limited in our transfer capacity over the internet, they will be posted at a later date. Thanks, Claire & Richard https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4212/...787d3e4a1b.jpg Map 1 |
Looks like you guys have had a great start to your trip. Make sure you spend some time in Central Otago - there are some great backroads crisscrossing the area and the views are spectacular.
Safe travels.:scooter: |

Hello,
The first episode was created with images taken the day we left our home. You will see how much snow we had on January 25th. Our dear son David was with us and we happily reminded him our recommendations... ;-) Images were taken in different airports, we had our last Tim Hortons I guess for a while... The total travel time from the first takeoff and last landing was about 38 hours. This video is about 6:30 minutes. Claire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Kkvz-21JE |
Episode 2 - Video
The second episode presents some images taken during our Walking Tour in Christchurch. It's incredible to see how many buildings have been damaged during the February 22, 2011 earthquake (scale of 6,3). The epicentre was very close to Christchurch and very shallow (5 km), which explains the scope of damages. And the last November earthquake did have an effect on the ongoing reconstruction/rehabilitation projects.
Sadly, 185 people lost their lives in 2011... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0CLuh1quZg |
Episode 3 - Video
This episode presents our first day on our bikes as well as our departure for a long trip around the southern part of the South Island. Our first day towards Arthur's Pass NP was very windy but we managed to get to Nigel's Hut just before the rain :-)
It was really nice to have a very cozy shelter during the following day, very foggy and lots of rain!! You will see how the river level got very high. We had to find another way out for our bikes... the best is at the end. This video is about 10:30 long. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX4fzfdg3V0 |
Episode 4 - Video
Leaving Arthur's Pass over the beautiful Otira Viaduct and then heading to the West Coast. Note that Richard lost some equipment right after passing the viaduct. Lucky guy, no damage to his laptop! :D
16 minutes long, enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svLc7o4k2Cc |
Episode 5 – Video
Going through Westland NP on the West coast, you will see nice winding and hilly roads around Franz Josef Glacier, highway 6 south and Fox Glacier. It was a very pleasant ride for us as by that time we were becoming much more comfortable on the bikes after riding for a few days. The weather was so so but no rain yet on this stretch. This video is about 12 minutes long.

Episode 6 – Video
Still on the West coast, leaving Haast after quite some rain during the evening and night. We were lucky to get a nice dry room in a backpacker hostel ☺. We entered Mount Aspiring NP and as we go down the pass, you can see the sky clearing up slowly. We enjoyed the very nice scenery along lake Wanaka and lake Hawea and went through the Crown Range area just before our long descent to Queenstown on very winding roads, finishing on very sharp hairpins. The day ends at Lake Moke, where we camped in the middle of hairy bushes but the scenery was spectacular! This video is about 27 minutes long.

Episode 7 – Video
A very short video caught between Lumsden and Te Anau on highway 94. It was so windy that we could hardly stay in our lane.

Episode 8 – Video
From Te Anau to Milford Sound through Fiordland NP, a spectacular 121 km ride and scenery! No wonder the Milford Road has earned World Heritage Highway status. Rugged mountains all around, cascading alpine rivers and wonderful walks on a variety of tracks (tracks in NZ = trails in Canada) makes this road a must on your visit to South Island.
You will see the Cascade Creek campground, winding road along a blue river, Kea birds at the entrance of Homer tunnel (1,2km long), fun hairpins again, spectacular views of Milford Sound, etc. The video is about 10 minutes long. Don’t miss it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOMKDT_t_PA |
Episode 9 – Video
Still in Fiordland NP near Cascade Creek campground, another gorgeous day to explore another very nice area which is Hollyford Road. We started at the end of this 17km gravel road with Humboldt Falls and its suspended bridge downstream. Another very unstable suspended bridge over Moraine Creek and our last track of the day towards Marian Lake, another amazing blue cascade. The video lasts about 3 minutes.

Episode 10 – Video
We are now entering the Catlins after a visit of the NZ southernmost city : Invercargill, where we spent some time in the lovely Queen’s Park and looking at the bronze of Burt Munro. The video ends at the picturesque Waipapa Point where you will see some seals playing on the beach. This episode is 4 minutes long. Enjoy!
