Thailand tour - May-June 2024
Bike tour #8.
Location: Thailand except North which I did 3 weeks in 2022. This round I am using my own bike, a Tiger XR 800 which I will ship on a RORO from my home city Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to Port Klang, Kuala Lumpur. Tentative distance: approximately 6,000 kms Duration: approximately 6 to 7 weeks. Will update more later. :scooter::mchappy:bier |
RORO was originally supposed to depart 30/4 but was delayed. It finally departed from my home city Kota Kinabalu on 12/5 evening.
I handed over the Tiger to the agent on 4/5. I flew into Kuala Lumpur on 12/5 and had an appointment at the Thai embassy on 13/5. I wanted to apply for the 60 day visa. However I was told that I would also need to show booking for all the hotels for my 60 days stay at Thailand besides the other documents submitted. Knowing that there is no way I can pre-book all my hotel accommodations I decided to forgo the idea of a 60 day entry visa. Prior to the appointment at the Thai embassy I has emailed Thai Immigration which were surprisingly efficient. They replied that as a ASEAN member passport holder, I would be allowed entry into Thailand for 30 days without any visa and I could go to any Thai Immigration office for a extension of stay for 30 days. The fee would be 1900Baht. If I had got the 60 day Visa from Thai embassy at KL there is no cost. That means that somewhere on the 3rd week of tour I would have to go to a Thai immigration office for an extension of stay. And also go to a Thai Customs office for TIP extension to my Tiger. |
RORO berthed at Port Klang on 16/5 and was chasing the agent to pick up my bike ASAP so that I could get moving.
I was staying at a budget hotel and didn't want to spend more time than necessary at KL. Finally I could collect Tiger in 18/5 evening! My daughter sent me to Port Klang and I rode Tiger back to the hotel and prepped her for departure early next morning. |
19/5/2024
Petaling Jaya to Changlun, Kedah 465km, 5.5 hours ride time I departed the hotel on Sunday 19/5 around 0700 hrs. Arrived Changlun around 1230 hrs. Picked up my Thai compulsory & voluntary insurance from GoThai office. The Tiger was able to cruise on the North South highways easily. In my previous tour of Peninsular Malaysia, I rented a Honda Vario 160 scooter and it struggled at highway speeds of 110kph. I had to ride on the emergency lane as I was too slow on the highway. With the Tiger I had no issues moving with the traffic on the highways. https://images2.imgbox.com/0f/6f/PDz8SM2u_o.png |

While at Changlun I found a detailing shop to get Tiger cleaned.
When I got back to the hotel I noticed my rear left turn signal was drooping. Prior to shipping Tiger back at home I had the same problems with both the front turn signals. I replaced them with LED indicators and that made the turn signals flash fast as my original turn signal were incandescent bulbs. And the LED weren't bright too. I had ordered online look alike turn signals for all 4 sides as I did not like the front LED I had replaced recently and had them delivered to my daughter at KL. I decided to go to Triumph Hatyai when I crossed the border into Thailand to get all the turn signals replaced since I had the replacements ready. |
It’s good to start seeing your report and some photos
Enjoy it See you in a few days Wayne |
Roger that mate.
It's a chore trying to keep a ride report. :scooter::mchappy::rofl: |

From Changlun 0700, headed to Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS border on the Malaysian side and then to Sadao, Thailand border crossing.
Stopped at the Thai immigration and they have a special counter for Malaysian with bikes. Then to Customs for the TIP for the Tiger. No crowd at all and it was smooth. It was a Monday and I crossed the Malaysian border at 0700ish. When I entered Thailand it is 1 hour behind so it was 0600ish. Stopped at Sadao 7-11 for some coffee and offered a donation to the Buddhist monk on his daily morning ritual. Then off to Triumph Hatyai to fix my broken turn signals. The mechanic was very competent. Replaced all 4 turn signals and no more hyper flashing and drooping turn signals. Took him around 1.5 hours to sort it out. Headed to Phattahalung where I had already booked my accommodation for the night. It's about 2 hours away from Hatyai. A lot of bikers like to stay at Route 41 Cowboy Town Phattahalung but I stayed elsewhere as it was cheaper. |

Left Phattahalung 0900. Rode to Moon Coffee, Ao Khanom for coffee & snack. Supposed to stay a night but decided to press on to Surat Thani instead. Distance Phatthalung to Ao Khanom 187kms, about 3hours. Left Moon Coffee around 1400hrs and the clouds looked very dark! Stopped to put on my rain gear. About 40 minutes from Surat Thani the rain poured down heavily. Continued to ride and my TCX boots got all wet inside. That's one thing I like about riding scooters is that your boots won't get wet as there is a floor board you can step on and protect it from water. Distance: Ao Khanom to Surat Thani, 76km, 1.5 hours Decided to stay 2 nights at Surat Thani to allow the boots to dry up. Hate riding in wet boots. My timing to start my tour is impeccable! The raining season has started! Took a Grab car for dinner at the night market as it was still raining. |

Wednesday 22/5/24 Surat Thani
Noticed that the front turn signal was loose. Probably not tightened enough at Triumph Hatyai. Went to a supposedly big bike shop which had a few R1200GS in the garage to get it tightened. The guy broke the indicator cover tab when he tightened it. Had to use cable tie to hold the cover. The new turn signals lasted 1 day only! :nono: |

5 week tour of Thailand completed.
I am flying home to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah tonight. Will update my report in due course. :scooter: |
Thursday 23/5/2024
Surat Thani to Chumphon 182km, about 3 hours https://images2.imgbox.com/ff/18/5DDQ5ZWS_o.png |
Departure time 0800.
It was raining around 0700 ish so I waited till 0800 as the road was still wet. On the road I met a fellow Malaysian biker on a KTM ADV250. I asked if he wanted a cup of coffee and we stopped along the route. The stall that we stopped at only had sachet (3 in 1) coffee but it was all right. We helped ourselves and poured hot water into a cup with the coffee. When I wanted to pay, the lady did not want my money. On this entire 5 week tour, this was the only place where I had coffee for free. After 30 minutes of chat, we put on our gear and rode on. The fellow biker was headed to Prachuap Khiri Khan which was my next stop. Arrived Chumphon around 1200 hrs and checked in at the hotel. After 20 minutes it started to rain heavily! My arrival at Chumphon was perfect! |

Chumphon to Prachuap Khiri Khan 176km, about 3 hours https://images2.imgbox.com/c3/76/G6XboW1e_o.png |
Left at 0800 and the weather was good.
Just before arriving at Prachuap Khiri Khan, went to the Ao Manao beach which is inside a Royal Thai Air Force base. Met a Thai who had just parked his 4x4 SUV and asked me where I was from. He did not speak English but we managed to get along with Google Translate. He used to ride a BMW 1250GS but sold it after an accident. The beach was nice and deserted. As I rode out of the Air Force base gate, a smartly dressed sentry gave me sharp salute. I was tempted to return the salute and take a picture but did not knowing that military bases are not the place to take sensitive pictures. LOL Went for the seafood lunch and the prices are not exactly cheap. Also had the bike washed and it was overpriced. |

Prachuap Khiri Khan to Kuiburi National Park 71km, slightly over an hour Short ride to Baan Rai Kong Mun and then to watch wild elephants at the Kui Buri National Park. When I rode there the weather was good. However it started to rain after I checked in at the hotel and in the afternoon I was picked up by a pick-up truck/ute to the Kui Buri National Park. Unfortunately due to the heavy rain, could not see any wild elephants at all. It was a waste of money but not the fault of the operator as the elephants did not want to come out due to the rain. https://images2.imgbox.com/20/47/GYvzRnOl_o.png |

Kui Buri National Park to Kanchanaburi 281km, slightly over 5 hours ride Normally from Google Maps estimated time, I will add on an hour for stops for ciggie, pee and coffee. Weather was good but hot and I felt tired. Riding on the highway is not fun for me as there is no scenery at all. This will be a 3 day break to explore Kanchanaburi as I am a fan of military history. I am also using the Hyperkewl cooling vest and it does help to keep the core body temperature down but I believe it would work best on a naked bike. My Tiger has a windshield and the wind is deflected towards the top of my helmet. My body does not get much wind so the Hyperkewl vest is not as efficient. https://images2.imgbox.com/88/6d/ei8Fx03J_o.png |

Kanchanaburi to Hellfire Pass to Sangkhlaburi 226km, about 5 hours with a 1 hour stop at Hellfire Pass. Left Kanchanaburi at 0645. https://images2.imgbox.com/48/32/d9hKqz4J_o.png |
Hellfire Pass was very informative and because of time constraint I could not do the walk which would take about 2 hours. Watched a 10 minute video presentation which was interesting.
Furthermore I was in the TCX riding boots which are not meant for hiking. It always brings a lump to me when I visit war memorials. The scenery is much better with more greenery rather than villages/buildings. https://images2.imgbox.com/84/60/MrUTrtpU_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/e4/93/9r7fdmHC_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/27/89/yQ8Mtzq0_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/1e/ce/WilFvs99_o.jpg |
From Hell fire Pass rode on to Sangkhlaburi.
It started to rain again so had to stop and put on the rain jacket and pants. Rain wasn't too heavy but still my socks got wet. My TCX Explorer 4 Goretex boots wasn't waterproof anymore. It has been with me on all my tours to South East Asia and maybe it's time for a new pair of boots. dohdohdoh:thumbdown::thumbdown: https://images2.imgbox.com/e1/71/8B6yK10c_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/22/3e/teCDJbs2_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/c0/76/dL9EU2jd_o.jpg |

Sangkhlaburi - Three Pagodas Pass - Nearn Sawan Viewpoint - Huai Mae Ka Min vehicle crossing ferry - Baan Sanechadra Homestay, Na Suan, Si Sawat District 192km, 5.5 hour ride But turned out to be: Sangkhlaburi - Three Pagodas Pass - Nearn Sawan Viewpoint - backtracked to Route 323 passing Hell fire pass - Ferryboat Ro Pho Cho - Baan Sanechadra Homestay, Na Suan, Si Sawat District 355km, 8.5 hour ride Planned route: https://images2.imgbox.com/1e/4c/APlTMmTZ_o.png Route actually taken: https://images2.imgbox.com/66/e0/3zMahgOe_o.png |
Left Sangkhlaburi at 0700 and the sky was dark with a little drizzle.
Headed to Three Pagodas pass for the thrill of being close to the Mynamar border. Then it started to rain when I arrived at Three Pagodas Pass. There is nothing much to see over here. A hard pass! Waited a bit for the rain to slow down and then headed back to Sangkhlaburi. While waiting a little boy wanted me to buy some food from him. I don't eat breakfast so I declined. Took route 323 which was scenic and enjoyed the ride as there was no rain. Then route 3091 to Nearn Sawan Viewpoint. Initially was cement and gravel roads and then turned into muddy sections and then to a single track. I was less than an hour away from the Huai Mae Ka Min ferry vehicle crossing! It also started to rain. Decided to turn around as it was too risky to do it solo on a heavy 230kg bike with street tyres. Furthermore I am not a off-road rider. Stopped at Nearn Sawan Viewpoint as the sky started to spit out heavy rain. Checked Google Maps and there was no other alternative but to take a long route to Na Suan, Si Sawat District. Backtracked to route 323 and then passed Hell Fire Pass and it was a long ride totaling about 10 hours with stops for coffee/ciggie/rain. I even had to get 2 litres of petrol from a shop along the way. About 30 minutes before reaching the homestay, it rained heavily again and boots were wet again. Getting really pissed with the boots now. LOL |

Na Suan, Si Sawat District to Mae Wong District, Nakhon Sawan 219km, about 4.5 hours ride time Didn't sleep well at Baan Sanechadra as was thinking how to resolve the water ingress to my boots. Asked a mate who I was going to meet in a few days time to order for me a boot cleaner and waterproof spray. Hopefully, with a clean and waterproof spray the boots would work in inclement weather. When I left Na Suan at 0915 the weather was glorious and the route had great views. Exactly what I wanted! https://images2.imgbox.com/17/86/9RCWE6c1_o.png |

I stayed 2 nights at Mae Wong District. It's a small town and it doesn't even have a laundrette.
The room was huge and it had a covered car porch. The original plan was to stay for a night only on the way to Sukhotai. Decided to stay another night as the weather forecast wasn't that great and i did not want to get wet again. It's the raining season at Thailand so it is what it is. My rain jacket and rain pants work well but the TCX boots were a real letdown. Furthermore the rear disc brake pads were getting low and needed to be changed. I brought spare brake pads front & rear on this tour. I actually had 2 sets of the rear brake pads, a new EBC sintered compound which I like and a used Nissin brake pad which came with the bike but was changed out early. I decided to tackle the rear pads job myself since I had a covered car porch. My mechanical skills are what I would describe as shite or what you would say as born with 2 left hands! All was well until I wanted to put the new EBC pads on the caliper and noticed that there wasn't much clearance to fit the caliper back with the new brake pads. I did not have the tool to push the brake cylinder back to gain clearance. After 30 minutes of cursing and cussing I took the used Nissin brake pads which could still be used and the caliper slided in nicely. So i did replace the rear brake pads but was using the used Nissin pads. dohdoh |

Sukhotai to Khao Kho, Petchabun 201km, around 3.5 hours https://images2.imgbox.com/a8/b7/pYxyD69h_o.png |
Left Sukhotai 0700.
Weather was very pleasant with nice scenery. The route reminded me of the road I took at Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. https://images2.imgbox.com/99/4b/ztoOzcWd_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/14/00/Thm3MKMF_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/de/0e/eNMHayKD_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/92/b0/WEploeI8_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/91/c1/6RAXJSfS_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ae/71/GjMF3G5g_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/72/1e/ng6Mg9L4_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/c1/62/v4meJ876_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ef/22/uAqqvz1L_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/00/c7/ZfdaaaAL_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/e4/2e/JeRfaQtg_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/47/e8/e5iKijty_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/0a/7b/qXWtJQrw_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/cd/eb/pJOfHmKK_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/cf/4e/FK7y22aq_o.jpg |

Khao Kho - Non Khun, Khon San, Chum Phae 173km, 3.5 hours riding Departed Khao Kho at 0645. The ride was very peasant indeed 24 to 26 Celsius. Scenery was awesome and the road had some twisty sections. Thumbs up! Met up with Wayne who is a fellow member of HU. He and I had been communicating a few months before my tour started. We had lunch and then I rode a short distance to my hotel. https://images2.imgbox.com/77/c8/4ahJfWTN_o.png |

Chum Phae to Khon Kaen - Chum Phae 185km, 3.5 hours total ride Day trip to Khon Kaen as there is a Triumph dealer there. Went to get the rear brake pads replaced and they also checked the chain tension and lubed chain. Took an hour to get the rear brake pads sorted. Wayne accompanied me on his Honda CB500X and we had coffee while we waited for my Tiger to be fixed. On the way back from Khon Kaen to Chum Phae, I was stopped at a police checkpoint. He asked for my driving license. When I gave him my Malaysian driving licence he asked for IDP (international driving permit). I told him that as per ASEAN agreement, member countries do NOT require IDP as the home country license would be recognized. Thus my Malaysian driving license is valid at Thailand and vice-versa for a Thai driving license at Malaysia. He was clearly fishing around for some money if I did not know the law. He asked me to go and I winked at Wayne! I do have a IDP but I let it lapse as it is valid till mid May only. The validity is for 1 year and since there is the ASEAN agreement on recognition of reciprocal driving license I did not bother to renew the IDP. https://images2.imgbox.com/69/e3/mVAjK0Jj_o.png https://images2.imgbox.com/80/20/d4JPp8GQ_o.jpg |

Chum Phae to Chiang Khan 200odd kms, 4 hours Met up with Wayne At Capell Coffee at 0840. Took a few pcitures and we set off for Chiang Khan. For once I did not use Google maps to lead me as Wayne was leading and I just rode behind him. We took an indirect route and not just following the 201 to Chiang Khan. Scenery was awesome and we had lots of photo stops. I only wish we had stayed another night at Chiang Khan as it looked like a cool place to chill. When we arrived Chiang Khan, we did not have any accommodations organized yet. We went for coffee and I then rode out to a hotel I wanted to check out if it was suitable for us while Wayne continued his coffee. It was suitable for us and I rode back to Wayne and we went to check in. https://images2.imgbox.com/7c/3d/CwT3aQii_o.png |
I especially liked the Chiang Khan night market.
To me it was the best organized night market I had been at Thailand. It was orderly. Wayne and myself had a meal and drinks there. This night market reminded me of the Seoul night market. https://images2.imgbox.com/8b/fb/gHbNoTp4_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/f6/e0/z4b8ckPX_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/75/82/hc9xOdZ0_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/46/7e/GeL0EOBG_o.jpg |

Chiang Khan to Nong Khai 186km, 4hour ride time Wayne & I departed Chiang Khan at 0800. We followed and hugged the Mekong river straddling the Thai/Laos border on the #211. The scenery was nice and we took it easy. After about 40minutes, it started to rain heavily. I stopped to put on my rain gear at covered spot and after putting on the rain gear decided to sit and wait a while. Wayne had pushed on. After about 15 minutes the rain stopped and I decided to move on. The heavy rain was localized as about 10 minutes ahead the road was dry! Caught up with Wayne and we continued on. https://images2.imgbox.com/17/0b/8lcQkOXA_o.png |

We stopped for coffee along the way twice and it was quite a different pace as when I am solo I tend not to stop too long and only have quick breaks.
As we arrived Nong Khai we decided to have lunch before going to the hotel. As we about finished lunch, it started to rain again and I quickly left for the hotel which was about 5 minutes out. Wayne wanted to wait the rain out and he would arrive at the hotel about 30 minutes later. https://images2.imgbox.com/be/8c/p1tFLqTj_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/0d/ea/pyo32zm4_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/15/85/Ltxs920t_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/8b/d9/z4DhqE18_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/da/fd/D8jo6MDy_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/82/0d/rLjcCkPx_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/84/b2/VPKntXoG_o.jpg |

Nong Khai Wayne left Nong Khai around 0730 to return to Chum Phae. What a legend! Would ride with you again mate! Enjoyed the banter and the laughs! I stayed on at Nong Khai as I had to go the Immigration and Customs to extend my stay at Thailand. When I entered Sadao, Thailand as a ASEAN member state citizen I am allowed 30 days visa free. I was into my 3rd week so this was the city to get it done. Likewise same thing for the TIP for my bike was only for 30 days. After Wayne left I went to get Tiger washed and then went for a slow run along the Nong Khai walking street. It was a good workout and then dinner I indulged myself! https://images2.imgbox.com/7a/ce/43xQ8eg6_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/e6/40/JVzK8lxQ_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/be/ae/3nIJjXf0_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/36/db/G9TuspGm_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/67/45/H9OaVQc8_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/60/b3/3FLkVhJ9_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ae/3b/zsQ0IrO1_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/91/5d/w3Ybqi9m_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/b4/14/CgG7LFVd_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ac/0c/ECflrfO1_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/39/4d/OL9Z4D8g_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/7c/dd/amJ7VGJi_o.jpg |

Nong Khai Today I have to go to Immigration and Customs. Wanted to be at Immigration by 0800 and it was a gloomy day with rain! dohdoh:rain::rain: Anyway put on my rain jacket and rain pants and rode slowly to the Immigration office which was 15 minute away. The Thai Immigration officer was very professional. Paid 1900Thai baht and my passport was stamped for another 30 days. She did ask where I was staying at Nong Khai and luckily the hotel owner who speaks fluent English had given me a receipt after she heard that I was going to Immigration. The receipt was required by the Immigration officer. Completed in around 30 minutes. Customs was the opposite though! Went to the main customs office which is a few hundred meters from the Immigration office. Was asked to go to the border checkpoint at Friendship bridge. Rode there and explained I wanted to extend my TIP for another 30 days. The customs officers were rude and insisted that I cross the Laos border and then return for another 30 days for my Tiger. Said I do not intend to cross in to Laos and just need to extend my existing TIP for another 30 days. I was about to leave as I was actually pissed at the Customs officers for being rude and insisting that I cross into Laos. Another Customs officer told me to go to another building. There I spoke to a female Immigration officer who spoke English and she understood what I wanted and directed me to the proper Customs section. I then used Google translate to tell the Customs officer what I wanted and she said wait here. She took my passport and the TIP document and after about 15 to 20 minutes she came back with my TIP with an endorsement of 30 days from the original date of 18/6/2024 to 9/7/2024. Success! In my mind if I failed to extend my TIP at Nong Khai I would then go to the next town/city Customs office to sort it out. Went back to the hotel and chilled as it was still raining. https://images2.imgbox.com/7c/d6/uSRQVplU_o.jpg |

Nong Khai to Beung Kan to Nakhom Phanom 322km about 6 hours ride with many stops due to heavy rain. https://images2.imgbox.com/df/b9/nz8Ksdtf_o.png Departed Pikul Aprtment Hotel at 0730. Hugged the Mekong river which is the longer route (#212) to Nakhom Phanom. However is it not like the Chiang Khan to Nong Khai where you can actually see the Mekong and Laos continuously. The 212 moves inward so there aren't many opportunities to see the Mekong. And rain started an hour from Nong Khai.Stopped at least 3 times as the rain was heavy and my boots failed again! Uggh........ I actually had shortlisted accommodation at Beung Kan just in case the rain continued to pour. However when I arrived Beung Kan the sky cleared up and I decided to continue all the way to Nakhom Phanom. The dark clouds were behind me now and I had to hurry before the dark clouds caught up with me. After 6 hours I arrived Nakhom Phanom at 1330. Went to the hotel and asked for room rate and I was set. Nakhom Phanom is opposite of Thakhek, Laos where I was there in July 2023. Changed out of my rain and riding gear and then headed out to the night market for food. |
https://images2.imgbox.com/9c/9a/OCdG8DVc_o.jpg
Then 20 minutes later another heavy downpour; https://images2.imgbox.com/ff/40/JMecdlQn_o.jpg |
30 minutes later I am still sitting at the same spot
https://images2.imgbox.com/7d/2a/z02WDFlj_o.jpg I normally do not eat breakfast. I just need coffee to start my day. I had some bread in the top box. So, I sat there ate the bread and had a few ciggies. LOL https://images2.imgbox.com/06/42/3xuraoUS_o.jpg |
The dark clouds are behind me. Quick pee and ciggie break and some water and then push on to Nakhom Phanom.

Nakhom Phanom to Khon Kaen 300km, 5 hours ride time I was tempted to continue to ride towards Ubon Ratchathani and then only head towards the direction of Bangkok and then move south to go back to Malaysia. But I decided to make my way down South now as the rainy season was making my ride uncomfortable with wet boots. https://images2.imgbox.com/28/2e/opLND90A_o.png |
Left the hotel at 0830.
Weather was very good today. Route 212 for the first 40 minutes was very scenic and after that was on Route 12 highway. Arrived Khon Kaen at 1330. Coffee stop https://images2.imgbox.com/41/3c/YlI2zuDZ_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/d2/82/gl2GTvsz_o.jpg Very nice dinner.... Michelin rated.... Khon Kaen to Nakhon Ratchasima 193km, slightly over 4 hours ride time Weather was good and departed at 0830 Took route #2 and it was the boring highway. Riding too slow on the highway is dangerous as there are aholes on the road. When I get bored, I slow down and that's where the aholes come right up to your ass.:nono: Arrived at the hotel at 1245 and did not realize that this is a big city. Hotel was very nice and even had a covered parking specifically for motorcycles. https://images2.imgbox.com/06/bf/rp80h14b_o.png |

Nakhon Ratchasima to Khao Yai Thieng Windmill - Khao Yai 120km, 2.5 hours ride time Weather was excellent if not a little hot. But I would take being hot over being wet. Went to the windmill which was really nice. Blossom Bloom flowers were ok only. Wanted to enter Khao Yai National Park to go to the viewpoint at KM30 but the entrance fee was 420Baht for foreigners. I declined as I felt it was too expensive. Thought Khao Yai's temperature would be a little cooler but it was hot and humid. https://images2.imgbox.com/2e/95/zNgEG019_o.png |

Khao Yai to Khao Yoi, Petchaburi My original plan was to to go to Ayutthaya but I reckoned since I already went to Sukhotai I would skip Ayutthaya. 326km, 6 hours ride time Departed at 0730. Even though I did not enter Bangkok itself and bypass only the traffic was congested. Weather was sunny and hot. Even though it was 1st gear and 2nd only for more than an hour (I think) it's still better than in rain. I didn't even get the chance to look around the roads as was concentrating on the road with cars zooming left and right. Having a modular helmet helps a lot at slow speeds. I would have cooked if I was wearing a full face. Luckily I had music to relax me. This is the first time I have music while touring. The Cardo Spirit HD was nice to have! But when you use earplugs you lose the highs and the volume set at maximum you still can't hear much especially when at speeds. But if riding without ear plugs you can really hear the bass and treble. I personally cannot wear earplugs more than 2 to 3 hours straight as my ears hurt. So, I wear them when I am on highways or doing faster speeds. And if my speed is slow like on mountain passes I don't wear earplugs. I've been using Alpine Motosafe Tour for few years now. I tried the Race version but it cuts off too much traffic noise. I was in Vietnam and when a car overtook me i got jolted as I did not hear the car at all. https://images2.imgbox.com/8d/fd/XyL3C4sC_o.png After clearing the Bangkok traffic, stopped for break at 7-11 https://images2.imgbox.com/15/94/Yt6tlbDh_o.jpg |

Khao Yai, Petchaburi to Hua Hin 93km, slightly over 1 hour ride. Left at 0700 and arrived at 0830 riding slowly. Short ride to Hua Hin which I had chosen as a rest point. First impressions as I rode into Hua Hin was nice town and looks upscale with lots of big nice houses and expensive cars. Stayed 3 nights. The hotel I stayed in did not have any parking for Tiger so i just parked beside the road and used the disc lock. I was concerned initially but the hotel was paid for so there was nothing I could do. It was actually safe as there are lots of people walking till late at night as it's on the bar street. When I book hotels i always look for secure parking and this hotel said it had parking for bikes but in reality it converted the bike parking with tables and chairs. The owner of the hotel actually allowed me to check in at 0900hrs so that was nice! https://images2.imgbox.com/e7/78/9Cy17sgS_o.png |
Good weather at Hua Hin during my stay there and enjoyed the food.
I actually went to Honda Big Wing Hua Hin and asked if they could change my front brake pads. The mechanic was willing but the supervisor said they only do Honda. Contrary to what I heard, Honda Big Wing do not do other big bikes from other manufacturers. Nice quiet place to have coffee https://images2.imgbox.com/c8/25/P8bXyg9p_o.jpg I had lunch at thus place 2 days consecutively. Food was nice and cheap https://images2.imgbox.com/ad/17/CnqMPgaD_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ae/5b/sUchaJYJ_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ba/2b/j9PBtuS4_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/0e/24/gyIsqoBS_o.jpg The Khao Soi isn't as good as the one I had at Chiangmai. https://images2.imgbox.com/a9/7b/WI2T4OQV_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/0d/0c/TGxPJQl8_o.jpg |

Hua Hin to Chumphon 266km, 4 hours ride time After a few days rest at Hua Hin, ready to hit the road again. Departed Hua Hin at 0945 and arrived Chumphon at 1245. Good weather but was boring highway only. https://images2.imgbox.com/4d/58/d2lVFHab_o.png |

https://images2.imgbox.com/a6/16/zG5m5anu_o.jpg The Clover Savana 3 jacket has been with me on all my tours and it's very well ventilated and makes it suitable for hot & humid climates. The only thing I wished was that the arm ventilation was a little more longer and had chest armour pockets. But overall it's a good jacket with CE AA rated and Level 2 armour all round. My pants is a Clover Ventouring 2 with Level 2 knee and hip armour. It's also very well vented but I believe it's not CE AA rated. Just A rated only. https://images2.imgbox.com/9a/3a/PMmEwelQ_o.jpg The Astars Bogota Pro is my favourite jacket if I get another jacket. https://images2.imgbox.com/93/38/NIGEUZgp_o.png I don't have any pants shortlisted as I can't really find any with such great ventilation. Chumphon to Khura Buri District, Phang Nga 257km, about 6 hours with stops due to rain https://images2.imgbox.com/57/ed/snrGT6Jf_o.png Torrential rain all the way. Stopped 3 times to take shelter. It was a wet wet ride. It's a small town as Krabi was too far away to do in a day's ride. The hotel I stayed was deserted... I was the only guest. Not a great place to stay. The hotel owner wanted to fleece me thinking I was a walk in customer. I told him I had already booked via OTA and it was already paid for. Told me to open the gate by myself and the only person I saw at the place was a lady sweeping the floor. |

Khura Buri District, Phang Nga to Krabi 190km, 3 hours ride time https://images2.imgbox.com/9f/23/eXQVQ1jq_o.png Light rain all the way to Krabi. I only stopped once for a ciggie break as was worried the clouds might open up and start pissing! Weather forecast for Krabi was wet for the next few days! Will not be able to explore. But it is what it is. When I arrived I went to the Yamaha flagship store and asked if they could change my front brake pads. The lady said they only do Yamaha bikes and I then asked for recommendation. She gave me location of the said shop and I went there straight away and got it sorted out. The man was well experienced and had the brake pads changed in 30 minutes. And the labour charge was 100Bahts. I kid you not! Bloody cheap. I gave him a very good review at Gmaps. Supposed to stay 2 nights but ended staying 3 nights due to the shitty weather. The hotel was very nice though. The room was big and it was beside the river. Tiger was parked inside the hotel beside the reception and at 2200 hours the hotel doors were closed and she was safely parked inside. I stayed at Krabi town and there are no beaches there. The beach is located at Ao Nang and it is about 30 minutes away. I never got the chance to go to Ao Nang due to the rain. Another thing weird about Thai drivers is that I am cruising along at 90kmh and then this fella on a car overtakes me on the right and immediately proceeds to slow down at 90kmh and go back to the left lane! Makes me boil! If you want to overtake go ahead and maintain a steady pace.... not overtake at 110kmh and then slow down to 90kmh where I am right behind your ass! I opened the throttle and rode at 130kmh for a minute or two on the long stretch of straight road and never saw the ahole again. When they overtake they don't look at the rear view mirror and just move back to the left lane as they please. I noticed this a few times........... weird........... |

Hat Yai to Sadao/Bukit Kayu Hitam border crossing to Taiping, Malaysia 277km, 4 hours plus ride time Departed Hat Yai very early at 0530 and arrived Sadao border crossing at 0630. I wanted to avoid the crowds at the border crossing. Immigration counter #2 for bikes and then Customs counter #8 to return the TIP. There was no crowd at all. After clearing Immigration and to get to Customs counter #8 you have to ride the bike and make a U turn to get there. I actually walked from Immigration to Customs Counter #8 as I found it confusing. The officer said bring your bike over here. So I did and then passed her the TIP and she didn't even check the document and told me Kap kun kap (thank you). I told her kap kun kap too and then rode towards Malaysia. Had my passport checked at Malaysia and I am back in Malaysia after 38 days at Thailand. Once I crossed over it was 0800 Malaysian time. I headed to a local coffee shop and had a Malaysian Indian breakfast which I missed. Then head to Taiping for a overnight stay before heading to Kuala Lumpur known as KL. https://images2.imgbox.com/13/a7/IeV6PbUp_o.png |
Weather was good all the way to Taiping but it is a boring ride with highways only.
Once I reached Taiping it started to rain. Timing was perfect! The hotel is not in town so I didn't go out for dinner since it was raining. Malaysian breakfast https://images2.imgbox.com/70/0d/AFn7hxzr_o.jpg |

Taiping to KL 273km, 4 hours ride time Weather was good and all highway only which is boring on the transport section. Rode to my nephew's bike shop where the bike will be washed and then left at his shop. Total distance for this tour was 6,888kms. I had no issues with my Tiger 800 besides changing the front and rear brake pads. The Tiger 800 triple cylinder is a nice engine and I especially love the linear torque delivery. The long travel suspension was very plush with the rear preload set to maximum. I intend to sell my trusty Tiger 800 at KL so am not shipping it by RORO back to Kota Kinabalu. The reason I am selling my loved Tiger 800 is she is a bit too heavy for me with my bad back and age. I prefer to get a lighter bike but have not decided what bike to get yet. https://images2.imgbox.com/69/25/rx2YAisk_o.png https://images2.imgbox.com/55/07/zO17Ez4w_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/27/94/ltOIW8V0_o.jpg https://images2.imgbox.com/ea/20/QiuC1elf_o.jpg Overall route I https://images2.imgbox.com/1e/37/85yXIx0i_o.jpg Overall route II https://images2.imgbox.com/11/38/qEatUjC5_o.jpg |

Looking forward to my next tour. In fact I already bought my flight ticket to Saigon on February 2025 as I want to go to Vietnam for the third time and do the South to North route. I'd like to add here that your experience with the TIP into Thailand from Malaysia for foreign registered vehicles MAY vary by customs station and Thai Customs officer.
My Malaysian registered bike had no issues as Thailand has specific exemption for vehicles registered in Malaysia, Singapore and Laos. :scooter::clap::mchappy: |
