$20-30k and 12months - where to?

The stories on HUBB have inspired me to go on an adventure of my own. My goal is to see the people and places that are skipped when not traveling by motorcycle. I'd rather ride a dirt road to a small village than a major highway to a big city. Planning a long route while considering weather, border crossings, and schedule is not easy. I'd love to hear your advice and experience on choosing an overall route before I dive too deep into researching each country.

My ideal trip looks like this:
- 12-months (but flexible)
- $20k-30k
- Start/end in San Francisco
- Minimal weather extremes
- Minimal political headaches (required guides, etc)
- Camping & cheap hostels

Preferred Destinations:
- South East Asia
- Australia
- South America
- Central America
- Africa
- Central Asia
- China (sounds problematic)

Thanks!

Too big a question. Do some research, read ride reports and try to get at least some idea where you want to go. Or maybe join one of the big guided tours like Globebusters, let some one else do the thinking for you and just enjoy the ride.

If you've got $20-30K in the bank that is a huge buffer...

Point your bike east and just go... and keep going... eventually you'll end up back where you started.

Of all the places listed I would say South East Asia and the Indian sub continent offers the greatest diversity for the time allowed. I would suggest buying or renting locally and when you reach a border that cannot be crossed with a vehicle you can use public transport.
There are enough climate variations to avoid too hot and too wet weather, July-August in the Himalayas for instance and more variety of cultures, foods and people than anywhere else in a similar area. It is also one of the cheapest places to visit although your budget is more than enough for the time allowed.
