6 months in Africa, when ?

Hello riders,

If you had 6 months to ride from Cairo to Cape Town, when would you leave from Cairo ? I searched on the HUBB but didn't find a precise answer :helpsmilie:

Can't say for the morthern parts, but southern Africa is best from February onwards - summer heat reclining, rainy spells getting less.

So IMHO I'd start somewhere around Dec/Jan. This is also wintertime for Egypt & Sudan.

I worked this out many years ago for a trip by public transport. The ideal focus was to arrive in Nairobi from the north in December, then transit at a moderate pace over the next five months into southern Africa, where I wandered around through July.

That's longer than your six month allotment, but maybe it'll give you something to go on. My timing was such that I missed all major and most minor rains plus as much ridiculously hot weather as was practical. Of course, there are other ways to think about this---like arriving just after the rains end, so everything is lush and green, or just before the rains start, so all the wildlife is concentrated at watering holes and is highly visible.

No guarantees, but I hope that helps.

I would be leaving Cairo around Aug. I know it is hot then, and would stay very hot thru Sudan and Ethiopia but should be Ok by Kenya and If you arrived there in Sep/Oct you would get to see the best of Africas wildlife. The wet season is not that bad in Sthern Africa until usually after Xmas and if your in Sth. Africa by then it is still a very pleasant country to be in even in the wet season, but honestly I think when ever your leave it will be a ripper trip. The things that you remember of it years later, will not be the WEATHER but the places and people you met:thumbup1: !

I would say the two limiting factors are:
- Summer in Sudan
- Rain in Ethiopia

December/January will be fine, it might start to rain slightly in Ethiopia around March.
