Acommodation possibilities in russia
Hi
I am going on my first big trip ever, so it is with great excitement that I have started planning it :) I am going to travel across russia from Skt Petersburg to Vladivostok and then back again. The trip is meant as an low cost trip and therefore my plan was to just use a tent where ever I ended up at night. I plan to ride without gps for the adventure. However I have found out that camping in russia is not allowed outside official campsites. So my question is: 1: How strict are the russians with this law ? 2: What are the options with campsites or just cheap B&B's in russia ? Are they easy to find or are there far between them Hoping for some advise, as this could easily add a lot of extra cost to my trip |
I did a lot of wild camping in russia and 80 other countrys were it was not allowed but never had any problems. Only once in Germany I had to pay 15 Euros to the police wich was still cheaper then sleeping on a real camping place...

Sure you can camp all you want in Russia!!! Speaking as a Russian, I can tell you for sure it is legal and common. Russians love camping (men mostly) ;)
One thing thought, make sure you have a good mosquito net in your tent!! There are hoards of them anywhere you go in Russia. They don't carry illnesses like in Asia and are really quite harmless, but a real bother!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
In terms of safety, most places are safe to camp if you give it some thought. Get off the main road and a little way away from villages and you'll be fine.
Otherwise you may end up waaaay too drunk to ride the next morning |
On the other end of the spectrum … if you're in a village (think wooden huts and houses with land attached), it's fine to ask to put up a tent inside the fence… the language barrier would be much more formidable than any fence or a dog

Oh, and don't camp by the side of the road. That's just not done. Go into the bush out of sight a bit.
