Advice sought - Oz to UK - when to start?
I'm looking at taking between 9 and 12 months to travel from Perth, Western Australia to the UK, departing sometime in 2013, and I'm keen to hear any suggestions on either when to start, and/or places to avoid due to adverse weather conditions.
Rough plan is: Oz Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Cambodia Laos Thailand - to airfreight the bike over Myanmar/Burma India ..... And then here I get stuck a bit as the two basic options look like: Plan A - Pakistan, Iran, Turkey etc, or Plan B - small corner of China, Kazakhstan, Russia etc The probability is that I'll take my DR650, but I've been dabbling with a GSX1400/DJP sidecar the past few months and love the whole sidecar thing, so a Ural outfit isn't out of the question ..... but that's a whole other topic of conversation! Any advice would be appreciated. I've read a fair few threads here already on the HUBB but I haven't as yet uncovered the one definitive thread that answers my questions .... Cheers, Vince |
heading other way
Hi Vince
Im in Perth and heading off shortly to do the route, or one of your routes the other way round. KKR looks good to me. I might do that next time, this time its via Iran, unless of course they refuse me a visa. I'll apply when I get to UK soon. |
Hi
We are looking at something similar but thinking to only take 4-5 months the main consideration for timing for us is the monsoon season.. Plenty of advise on the Lonely Planet sites regarding this. We are planning to leave from Melbourne in March but as i say we will moving a bit quicker than you.. Have fun Regards Mark |
Cheers guys - thanks for the tips. Steven - I was looking at your website over the weekend - it's almost time for you to hit the road hey - have a great trip !

I have no idea, how accurate this is, and it probably will vary from year to year, especially when El Nino/La Nina is strong, but here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MeanMonthlyP.gif |
May/June is the beginning of the dry season in Indonesia. If you take your time going north, you might just time it right to miss rainy seasons for north of the equator.
We are currently in Indonesia doing just about the same route you want to do - on bicycles though. |
Thanks guys for your advice - and Jacques & Mandy - I take my hat off to you both! I was traveling thru northern Laos last year by motorbike and I thought that was challenging enough on a Baja 250 until I met some guys doing it by pushbike - now that's hard yakka !!!
