Best period: Rotterdam-Vladiwostok
Hi All,
What would be the best period to make an tour from The Netherlands to Vladiwostok? Need some advise. Djin |
Hi,
Depends on how long you will take, which route (all the way Russia or Turkey/Iran/stans?). So probably leaving at May/June would give you an advantage to get near Mongolia in July (again all depending on your travel time). This is the high-season for Mongolia and the Gobi desert could give you days of approx. 40 degrees celsius... So.. Perhaps a bit more info would be helpful! |
If you're going directly and not prepared for riding on frozen roads, you want to aim for the May to September (inclusive) window when the chances of getting slow are very low.
If you're taking a longer route, then I would stay away from Iran / Turkmenistan / Uzbekistan between June and August when the temperatures are uncomfortably high. |
I went through Russia and Siberia to Ulan-Ude, then turned south in June-July. The weather was generally very pleasant and one could buy fresh produce and even wild berries and mushrooms along the road at very inexpensive prices. Certainly can't do that in the winter!!
I am uninterested in Siberia in the winter; I live at 61 deg. N and I know what it is like already. Charlie |
I'm a bit mystified why this question comes up so often on this site; a few times a year at least. The question is even less useful when you don't mention whether you're on a moto, in a car, on a train, etc.
The best period to go from the Netherlands to Vladivostok on a motorcycle is summer: early summer, mid summer, late summer, take your pick. What do you want, warmest weather, coolest weather, fewest bugs, longest days, shortest skirts? Winter is cold. Spring and fall are cool and wet. Let us know if you have further questions. |
Hi Motortreiter,
Don't get irritatated, but to clarify, I have 2 month for this trip on a motorbike ( most of us on this site) I do not want to ride in the winter, so Regarding all comments for me the best period will be between may-september. Thanks all, Djin |
Don't mean to be irritated, and every one here would be glad to help, but please ask more specific questions!

Russia to Alaska by 4 Wheel Drive
Hi All,
I have just finished driving a Toyota Landcrusier from Singapore to Europe and covered some 32,000km. Im now looking at planning Stage 2 for 2017 from Russia into Alaska. I have heard of people doing this in 4X4. I would be keen on any tips or advice on how to do this and what time of the year. |
Nobody has ever driven from Russia into Alaska; there is sea in between which rarely freezes and is not stable even when it does. It's also very difficult (physically and bureaucratically) to get anywhere near the easternmost point of Russia, and there is no legal process to cross from Russia to America.
Winter (Dec - Mar) is the best time to travel in the Far East of Russia (though you'll need to modify a diesel vehicle), but from Russia to the USA you would need to ship, most likely through South Korea or Japan. |
