Border crossing Transdniestr: going from Chisinau to Tiraspol

Did anyone done this recently? Going via Bender or Grigoriopol?

danielsprague 16 Feb 2014 18:55

I did it in October 2011 Chisinau - Bendery and Ribnitsa - Rezina.

Any bribes involved? How long did it take you at the 'border'?

danielsprague 17 Feb 2014 00:08

No bribes, none even asked for.

They wanted to see the registration document for my truck, they then put some really huge numbers into a spreadsheet, we're talking six figures here, when calculating the entry tax, and it turned out at about $13 if I remember correctly.

It didn't take very long, though obviously we're not talking Schengen here. From memory it might have been between 1 and 2 hours for the check coming in.

On the way out, across the Ribnitsa - Rezina bridge, it was very quick.

People tend to go to Transdneister for the novelty, and some bunk about it being the USSR frozen in time. It is an interesting place, but there are some things worth seeing - the Monastery in Kitskany and the Dneister bends north of the capital. Bender Fortress is also quite nice.

We have done it several times, be aware of their latest "rules":

10hrs maximum stay in this unrecognized country. Don't take pictures in public.

Also be aware of that if something will happen to you, you are in a unrecognized country means no help or visit of your embassy from Moldova or anywhere else. Also Your Insurance is most probably not valid.

My advise as I think you are a Belgium: ar least let R.de Grooff, a Belgium who was the Dutch consul in Moldova and still living there, know that you are going there. In case of, he has the best relationships to help you out.

GRTZ,

JP

10hrs maximum stay in this unrecognized country.

Are you sure?? When did this change? Do you mean 10 hrs maximum stay before having to register??

Jervig 17 Feb 2014 11:05

I hope that you noticed I wrote: "rules" because rules are changing all the time without notice and are used and misused all the time. This 10 hrs rule is old, dissappeared for several years and reintroduced some 2 or 3 years ago.

On the other hand, between TRANSDN. and UA is hardly a border at all, so who will check. On the other hand it is normal that police will check you in the main streets of Tiraspol.

Tip:

Buy cognag and visit their football temple and school, it's impressive.

For the 3rd picture I was "fined" € 50,=

JP

Don't understand why to be fined for taking picture in Moldova?
Was in Chisinau for 5 days back 10 months ago. Took picture on the streets everywhere in Chisinau. Nobody even said a word!

Or is there a special "no photo" area ?

:oops2:

In Transdniestr it is not allowed to take pictures from everything!

vdh-be 17 Feb 2014 12:47

We are thinking of going to Tiraspol for 1 day and night. As far as I can figure out you don't need to register for a stay of less than 24h. It all depends how much time is needed at the border. Or we could take a taxi from Chisinau...

Capital of Transdniestr is Tiraspol, not Chisinau.

Well i took loads of pictures and stayed more than 10 hours with no issues at all, you need to buy insurance at the border but very cheap
