Britain, where to go.
I'm heading to Britain mid June until late July and am seeking a list of "you have to go there's". Right now looks like I'll be starting near Pembroke (long story:biggrin3:) ending up in Scotland.
Traveling solo. Want relaxing, beautiful, interesting small towns, B and B type lodging, archeological sites, great roads (of course!), no major cities. Advice greatly appreciated! |

Lulworth Cove which is near Weymouth (on the south coast) is a very nice area, as you head down the hill from Lulworth Military camp there was a pub on the right just before the village that makes its own scumpy cider (very strong). There is also a castle and an abandoned village (it was evacuated in the war due to the military ranges taking the area over), you used to be able to visit the village, check with the camp There is also Poole which is a nice town one night a week (can't remember which one) the used to have a bike night and it was usually very busy. The whole area is great round there. Stonehenge is worth a visit, in the Salisbury and Tidworth area, also some nice roads and scenery. If you area heading up North to Scotland then a stop off in the Yorkshire area is a must, a ride round the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors is great, lots of periodic tiny villages and old Mills in the area. Loads of great riding roads in the middle of nowhere. The is also Lake Windermere which is a nice spot. Whitby is a nice small old town with a very old church. Places like Hutton le Hole, Helmsley and Pickering are nice towns, there is still an old steam train that runs in the Pickering area but cant remember exactly where from (if you are in to that). As you go towards Scotland try and go through the middle of the country and through the Cumbrian hills. Once in Scotland the area around Loch Ness is nice as is Oban and Gretna Green area. Be sure to visit some of the old Whiskey Distilleries. Most have tasting rooms and some have tours. If owt else springs to mind I will post more Enjoy it Wayne |
Britain, where to go.
I'll post up some routes but for starters:
From Pembroke head into Mid Wales. Some real gems there. Favourites for me : Road from Llandovery past Llyn Brianne and through Abergwesyn common (ssh, this ones a secret......) Youve got to do the Elan Valley too (between rhayader and Aberystwyth) (My inlaws have a cabin near Llandovery - give me a shout on dates - if they work happy to give you a bed for the night and show you round the above stunning back roads) Snowdonia NP Lake district Others will advise on borders of Scotland and SW islands, but plenty of joy there Highlands: suggest Rannock Moor through Glen Coe, road to Gairloch, sky, Applecross peninsula, nW coast from there through Ulapool, round the north coast through Tongue, SE back to lairgs to Iverness and then into Cairngorms (skip Jon O Groats - scottish highlands amazing but far NE corner flat and a bit dull) Then back down through England - take in Yorkshire Moors, yorkshire Dales, Peak District and if you have time get down into Cornwall. No shortage of historic sites, castles etc all over the web so just fit to your route. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
new forest! also, lock your bike up, always! there is LOTS to see in the uk, i am english and i still have not seen amny things. i lived in wales for a while, wales is a very nice place, as a rule, steer clear from the big towns and cities and you will have a great time and see lots of great stuff!
ps. remember to drive on the wrong side of the road! |
If you are going to Scotland and want to visit archeological sites you MUST visit Orkney. There is just so much to see with marvellous stone circles, bronze-age dwellings, iron-age and pictish. I spent three days there and could have spent ten.
Some really great self-catering bunkhouses and hostels. I can thoroughly recommend Hamnavoe Hostel at Stromness in Orkney for use as a base. The Outer Hebrides (Lewis, Harris, etc) are also brilliant and the ride across the extreme north of Scotland between Orkney and the Hebrides is the best I have ever experienced in the UK. http://www.morocco-knowledgebase.net...-turquoise.jpg It could be the Mediterranean, but it's Harris in the Outer Hebrides I put together a pile of links and suggested routes to help people visiting Orkney, Shetlands and Outer Hebrides. . |

I have to worry about locking up the bike? That's a bummer. Will a brake disc lock be good enough? |

Thanks! |
Sorry, I obviously missed a digit when I copied/pasted. The link is at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...scotland-77073.
More than 20 routes, over 200 waypoints including Haggs Bank Bunkhouse run by one of the regulars on here. One of the routes heading north goes via the Lake District which is another 'must'. So beautiful! . |
The Dales/moors/peaks suggestions will not disappoint.
I wouldn't discount the cities. A decent Leeds, Bradford or Brummie curry ( plus pint or five) really should be part of the UK experience. Andy |

Waterproof boots, pants, jacket and gloves!!!!! If you want new boots then Motorcycle Boots - Classic Styling & High Performance Boots by Alt-Berg ... note the fitting instructions! A visit to the factory on the way up to get a fitting .. and then another on the way down? Depends on their work load and your timing. A GPS with relevant maps. There are a few pubs that do accommodation too. Some of the Youth Hotels are good to stay at too. Good luck. You'll probably arrive at London ... I'd do some of the museums while you are there .. |

I've been to London (definitely didn't see everything, haha). The museums are wonderful. |
