Can Ushuaia be reached around May?
 

Does anyone know what kind of road conditions are in that area around May?
Seems like it is going to be around April - May, before I could reach it... :scooter:

Average high 44 and average low 36 on May 1.

When I was there (chilly even in February), the local blokes were showing me pictures of their bikes with nail-studded tyres for winter...

However I also know that some of the fast riders trying to get the record are there in the middle of winter, for example, Nick Sanders was there in late June 2011. so it is definitely doable.

In europe I used to ride every Christmas somewhere, coldest was -22C when I was going to Portugal :D

Hi, I´m from Santa Cruz, right north of Tierra del Fuego. I know the area. If you go by that date, there is a big chance that you get freezing temperatures and even snow. Or you may be lucky, and get just a chilli weather. It´s up to you to take chances. But maybe you want to ride with winter tires... In that case, go!

What's it like in Feb/March? Thinking of leaving La Paz late January and seeing how far I get - any tips on climate? I survived many nights on the altiplano but have no wish to be ploughing through driving rain and sleet :)

Like other Polar regions, Tierra del Fuego area is pretty unpredictable. Weather can shift quickly. February/March is end of the "Summer" season down there, sort of their Autumn/Fall. Mostly OK but sometimes WET, in my limited experience. (never lived there .. but spent weeks there)

Was there several times '76 to '79 (Antarctic work) Mostly we hung up operations/support by mid March, trips across the Drake ceased at that time except in emergencies. We did operate locally however, just did not cross the Drake to Antarctic Peninsula.

If anything, weather now can be more extreme, unpredictable. (Global Warming) The wind can be more a factor than rain/snow/cold, so figure that in too.

Mostly just depends on your luck and the kind of year they are having.
A few years back .. it froze in Buenos Aires ... unheard of apparently. (June or July mind you) So if it's freezing in B.A., can you imagine being on the road a 1000 miles further South? Such a remote area ... have a plan.

In March, weather could go either way ... but do expect rain and fairly cold, but no worse than high Altiplano, probably better. bier
