Cape Town to Europe
Just after a few people thoughts and opinions.
What time is a reasonable (ie not breaking world records, but not staying in one spot to watch a tree grow) for Africa S to N. Assuming the east coast route? Have just completed a London to Tokyo ride via Reykjavik, Rabat and Dushanbe and am now in withdrawal. As a cure am day dreaming the next trip. Also Alaska to Chile, same question of time? Cheers |
From Norway to Cape town took us a year, but that was including west africa. Once we reached the east coast (Sudan), we used 8 months to get down. This wasn't dragging our feet, nor being too speedy. I'd try to avoid doing it much faster.

From London to Capetown down the west coast, and back to London via the East Coast took five months and six day. This included many stops to smell the roses. From Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia, figure about six months, if you want to meet people along the route and have something to talk about. Want more info? Look at my books in the "Books" section. My full name is Werner Bausenhart.

From Alaska to Chile it just took us about 6 to 7 months, we did it from June to now. So you'll catch Summer in USA - we stayed in the mountains to avoid the heat. Ok, we've been to Vegas...it's a must. You'll catch some rain in Central America anyway and propably in the North of South America - Rainseason starts more or less in November/Dezember and lasts to about March/April.
You can do a lot faster or slower - check out http://www.panamericana2003.de for our route to get some ideas. Don't worry about the german, here is a translation-button. |
