Do you need one to cross africa as Ive been told by a few people you can just enter a country on a tourist visa, do you all have one?

Ive also been told horror stories (albeit from a few years ago) with people having to leave bonds for their bikes and being charged duties etc.. Is this true as I'll be travelling on a budget.
