cruise ship
Has anyone tried a one way to Alaska then taking a cruise ship down to Vancouver? I'm wondering if the ship will take a bike on as cargo.

Ferry alternative?
I stopped by a travel agent about 3 years ago and asked the same question. I was told that they do not anymore... but he really didn't do any in depth investigation. If they don't, as an alternative, you could consider going by ferry Alaska Marine Highway System :: Official Site :: Alaska DOT&PF (I think the Alaska Marine Highway System goes as far south as Bellingham, Wa) or consider stringing something together between the Alaska and BC Ferries Maps of our Service Areas | BC Ferries - British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. . Looks like they may tag up in Prince Rupert. Won't be a "cruise" exactly, but the scenery should be great.

Yeh, mine was a "ferry" rather than a "cruise". The scenery and wildlife were superb. They also have people explaining the sights/sounds as the ferry goes past.

Initially, I looked into the ferry because I wasn't too keen on doing the same road north and south. But then l saw I was able to string together a route up and back with very little overlap so dropped the idea. Beside, I wanted to ride :mchappy:
But I have to say that going one-way by ferry does have its scenic attractions that may make it a serious alternative. It is a pricey alternative though. Looks like a motorcycle from Prince Rupert to Haines is $212, rider is $160 and cabin about ~$170 depending on quality. If I'm reading the schedule correctly (tricky), it looks like about 28 hours? |
Don't need a cabin. Lots of people "camp" on deck...

I have travelled on the Alaska State Ferry route from Juineau to Ketchkican.
Very cheap, clean and good food compared to european ferries, goes all the way down to Prince Rupert. Lots of wildlife to see on the way, keep your eyes open. The best bit is that its NOT acruise ship. The cruise ships cannot get through the Wrangel narrows and have to go round. |
