Darwin to Sydney best route
Hi All,
Enquiring on behalf of Radio Active Angel who has travelled from Germany via Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Indonesia and now in Darwin on final leg home to Sydney for Christmas on 1988 BMW R100GS. Looking for best route home - thinking of travelling to Tennant Creek Mount Isa etc. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks for the tips .... |
That is mostly tar..
from Daly Waters (north of Tenant Creek) you can go east to Borroloola then dirt - 'Savanna Way' to Burketown .. then south .. if you want to get to Mt Isa dirt via Gregory Downs (and a side trip to Lawn Hill is recomended for a scenic break) or you can keep heading east to hit the coast and tour down alongside the Great Barrier Reef... Or you can go south to Winton and travel south through to Tibooburra then east to Sydney .. a fair bit of dirt there.. |
The easiest route from Darwin to Sydney is down the Stuart Highway to Three Ways (just north of Tennant Creek), across to Mount Isa and Cloncurry, then down to Longreach, Barcaldine, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Bourke, Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst and Sydney. Another option from Dubbo is across to the Hunter Valley then down the freeway to Sydney.

My suggestion: Via Alice, take a look at Kings Canyon & Olgas - Marla or Coober Pedy - Oodnadatta Track - Lyndhurst - Cameron Cnr - White Cliffs - Dubbo etc.
Good mix of sealed roads, gravel and lots of landscape. |
Thanks very much for your suggestions - greatly appreciated.
Take off on Friday via the Stuart Highway. Good riding all... |
If you are not use to long stretches of dirt riding i would keep away from the oodnadatta - it isnt that difficult but can catch you out and it can be as a bit of a wait for help.
if you are confident with the loose stuff why not go across the sandover highway into queensland - bit rough on the queensland side but ok on the territory side - better ride now the wets almost gone Sandover Highway |

I would stick to the black top unless you are very good in the mud. Cheers TravellingStrom |
