Do I need a carnet for Russia and Mongolia?
Hi folks,
Anyone know if I need a carnet for Russia and Mongolia. appreciate your help! thanks a million regds Oisin |
For Russia, NO.
All you need for a vehicle is the (presumably EU style) registration document + written authority to use it if not in your name. A translation of the document is not necessary, assuming you can point out the Registration Number on it to them. They let you in without insurance documents but you can AND SHOULD buy it at or just after the border if you don't already have it - certainly before the first ДПС check point! I think Mongolia is just about the same. Others will confirm - or put me in my place! |
Tony P, how about for US registered bikes?
Thanks... Dan |
For US registered bikes ideally you would have title and registration. I have used just title several times with no problem. You could probably also get by with just registration. basically you need some official-looking document to wave in front of them.

both countries the same
you (theoretically) need drivers licence and vehicle registration document for bikes ... other than that, you need (of course) visas for each. I tend to use IDP and ICMV in lieu of Drivers Licence and Registration.
Pretty simple actually as far as documentation goes. No difference for US registered bikes. |
I second the recommendation to use the International drivers Permit, available at AAA. As far as I can tell, the ICMV is not available in the US.
I think the US is unusual in having seperate title and registration documents. As mentioned, I have succesfully used title only several times, although the border people usually ask why it does not have my license number or an expiration date...I just tell them that "that is how we do it where I'm from..." |
