Estonia, south into Eastern Europe suggestions
 

Hi there,

Me and my buddy are arriving in Tallinn from Helsinki next week, getting the motorcycles serviced in Tallinn then heading south. The plan is to be in Croatia a month later. This is our first time to Eastern Europe so looking for suggestions around the area. We don't have visa's for the Ukraine and Belarus but any other country is an option. The only real "must do" for us is the Transfagarssan in Romania, we have no other plans on the way, we tend to just speak to others in campsites or look for small roads on maps and plan that way.

We tend to avoid the big cities, just a bit of a hassell on the motorcycles as you'd know.

So any suggestions as we head south to the Mediterranean through Eastern Europe? We know a month is way too short but it can't be helped, my buddy is meeting the significant other.

Firstly, do you have a workshop in mind for servicing your bikes? What bikes are you riding? If not, let me know and perhaps I can find a decent workshop for you.

If you are heading south, then luckily the south of Estonia is very pleasant. I can't speak for Latvia, nor Lithuania: I've not seen much or them, only the Latvian coastline, which is lovely!

Where in the med are you aiming for: that will largely influence places that fit your route in the coming month.

However, all things being equal, the south of Poland is supposed to be beautiful.

Logically, Hungary and Slovakia lie on your route to Romania, and I think the Czech Rebuplic is supposed to be nice too, although the east of the country looked pretty industrial.

I can only recommend Croatia: everyone who's been there has said it is breathtaking. My wife has also been to Ljubliana in Slovenia and she also said that was a jewel.

Not much in the way of suggestions, I know, but enjoy the trip and enjoy Tallinn: don't rush through Estonia if you can help it. It is small, but is worth investigating! I've been investigating for 4 years and still haven't seen the half of it!

Thanks for the info! Warthog, we have the bikes booked in with the KTM centre "Ekstreemmoto" just outside of Tallinn, and will be spending 3 days or so in Tallinn. Whynot, just about to read the photo's and check out the pics, thanks!

Any idea what camping is like down through eastern Europe?? We'll be initially staying in the campsite in Tallinn to kick the trip off.

Dave may i advise you to go to the Pirita Harbour camping.
It's much cheaper and very nice to walk around the harbour and the beach. The city camping is crap, only to pieces of grass and very unfriendly recpection peoples. It's in the middle of industrial buildings. You pay for your tent and your self € 18, and the Pirita kost you € 3 and € 3 for a shower. (no kitchen available) Bus to town cost you only €1.40 two way. And a big supermarket across the street.

Bye the way, go into town to RMK ( www.rmk.ee; Viljandi maantee 18b, Tallinn), they provide free camp places al over the country.

Glad you're sorted for bike servicing.

No idea about camping as a general rule. However, in Estonia, if I am not wild-camping, I go the RMK (Forestry Commission) sites. Usually in nice spots, but minimalist: an out-house cozzy, a fire pit, some fire wood (although be prepared to collect some kindling, and possibly some little covered area. The interactive map is only in Estonian, so use google translate.

Pack mozzy repellent. Autan is my favourite brand and I go for the Autan Plus as it is supposed to keep mozzies, those little SOBs ticks (carry nasty stuff over here) and horsefly and is DEET free.

Pirita Camping
 

Hi there,

Thanks for the info on Pirita camping Richard-NL, this place is great (I'm here now!). 3 Euro's a night, 3 Euro's for a shower, right at the marina and the beach, small supermarket, cafe and bar next door, a scenic walk into town (about 45mins), an easy bus ride into town (10 minutes, 1.60 Euro, bus numbers 1A, 8, 34A or 38 to/from Viru Centre), a great and huge supermarket across the road, and free internet that I'm on now! Thoroughly recommended.

We're going to try and swing by an RMK campsite as we head south and, sadly and regrettably, leave the country.

Hi, last year did Latvia and Lithuania, no probs finding a campsite. if you have GPS download archies campsites poi (use google).

This year did Poland, Slovakia and Czech rep, no probs finding campsites but I did use hotelbooking.com and found a lovely 20 euro including bfast pension in Slovakia (was nice to have a little comfort).
