From Germany to Mongolia by motorcyle
Hello. I´m 22 years old and am an active person. Me and some friends of mine are planning to make one of our´s biggest adventures ever. We´ll be driving from Berlin to Mongolia! First of all, what bike do you prefer? I will buy one later this year, cuz we are leaving in June 2017. I wanna get to know my bike as well. We will be driving on both good roads, but also off-road, dirt roads and so on. This vehicle are to tolerate these bad conditions including bad weather, bad air, mountains, different airpressure. Also, it has to be between 500-700 cc and under 94 hp like medium heavy motorbike. Of course, we´ll drive all day long, so it has to tolerate to drive long. So, which bike do you recommend?
Edit: we will be driving through Russia, visit Moskva and continue the journey along the southern part of Russia! There will be bad and good roads though, but any tips for where to drive? which highroad man? What should we explore? Our plan is going from Norway to Berlin, from Berlin to Moskva, from Moskva to Astana, and from Astana to Ulaanbataar (Mongolia). But which exact roads do you recommend? |
Hey,
My partner and I are doing a similar trip right now. I have a Yamaha Tenere (1988), she a BMW F650GS 2004. Her's is more comfortable, mine is old was was mistreated in a previous life but is doing OK. The Russian response to her bike is: wow, German bike + Russian roads = not good. We'll see, it has done 4000km of it so far, and is going great guns. I can recommend Club45 in Omsk for a check up when you get there - cheap, good. Awesome people. Tell them I say hi. I also recommend offline-google-translate on your handy phone. We have got to Kazakhstan so far, next: Altai, Russia (again) and Mongolia. We got dual entry business visas (easy, some $$ - you can get it in Germany if you're German. I am Australian, had to get mine in Sweden...). I put a Reindeer skin on my seat that I bought in Lappland. Made a huge difference. Russian roads are heinous! We went in this order: France, Germany, Poland, Lativa, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan. If you have never before driven east of Germany, I can recommend Poland and Latvia as introductions to Eastern road etiquette. After these places you will be more prepared for the madness of Russia (though nothing can truly prepare you - be your most vigilent). On average I have seen evidence of road fatalities every 400km so far in Russia, and I expect this trent to continue. In Norway, go to Lofoten. Seriously. far out (see our pics, link below). enjoy m Mat and Theresa ride - Mat and Theresa's big ride facebook.com/mattheresa2016 @mototouring16 |
Hello sim11,
My advice is a F700GS, because I ride a F800GS. :-) How long you are planning to go? If your track is prepared, please post it here. By the way, I'm going to go to Ulaabaatar in June 2018 with my GS, does anybody want to join me? Most probably, I will drive along the Silk Road from Turkey to Ulaanbaatar. The bike will be shipped from Ulaabaatar back to Germany. The trip takes approx 4-5 weeks. Next year is Ukraina planned. Who wants to go with me to Ukraina? So we can get to know each other, befor we go together to Ulaanbaatar in 2018. :-) LG loskop |
Hi loskop!
If you need information from the mountain roads from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan you can look here. Highest mountain roads & Passes in Pamir, Tian Shan and Alai Mountains I will update the list again and again! :mchappy: Greetings from Kyzyl-Tuu Wolfgang |
Hi Wolfgang,
Thanks for your the link!! It is really helpfull. My plan has changed. I still want t go to Mongolia. But I don#t want to ride the whole way. Now, I am going in 2019 and my moto cycle will be shipped to Irkutzk or directly to Ulaanbaatar. But one days, I will ride to/in Kyrgistan and will across some passes from your list!! Thanks again. I am thinking about going from Zurich the same way and was thinking of shipping back to anywhere in europe actually. Germany would be good too. What shipping company do you use? Wanna take 3 months, so I would have time to enjoy the countries, so MAY-JULY |
Hello ride_with_vlad
I have contact to: LOXX Logistik-Dienstleister They are based in Germany and seem to be experts in shipping motorcycles to Asia and return. By the way, I am going to Mongolia in 2019. I have changed my plans... Let us know which company you will take, what does it cost and how your experiences have been. |
Maybe it's of interest to someone, who wants to go from Germany to Mongolia. I did this trip last year in August and September (2017). I was riding from Hamburg to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Mongolia (Ulaanbaatar), back to Russia again then Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia again, Ukraine, Poland back home to Hamburg.
I did the trip on a BMW R1150GS Adv. which belongs to me since 2003. The whole trip was 59 days and 23483 kms. If you want to know more and/or download tracks of my whole journey, then check my private (and ad free) website. Feel free to contact me, if you have any questions about my trip. Good luck for your trip! Wolle |
