Germany to Italy late march possible with snow???
Hi,
About to commence a London to kazakhstan ride, trying to work out how to get to Rome, is there too much snow currently in the alps, or should I ride through France and go around the Med coast?? I'd love to go through southern Germany and down Brenner pass or a better one if open, otherwise il take the coast road - either way, beats working! What's best way to check the status of some o the alpine passes? Cheers Tom |
Hi,
Just check it online: ALPENPORTAL | Straßenbericht Alpenpässe Last time i went there it was june and even then some of the swiss passes were still closed. I went around the bar but only a few kilometers later there was a 5m hight wall of snow blocking the road so i had two options: using the expensive Lötschtal Autoverladung train or ride through france. It al depends on the weather... |
I wouldn't worry
...unless there's exceptionally bad weather ( always a possibility) ...then the snow should be just on the ski-slopes where it belongs... :scooter:
It would take incredibly bad weather conditions for the Brenner pass to come anywhere near having to close, it's basically just a major road artery and not much of a high mountain, so I wouldn't worry much about that. Keep an eye on the weather forecast , but I really think you should be fine. Since you're heading to Kazakhstan then you're probably not that interested in riding up and down alpine passes anyway. |
Cheers Tobi & Giacomo. Exactly who I wanted to talk to, locals! So in theory I should have a pretty clear run through Austria etc ? It's a bit hard to tell for me at present - I'm supervising earthworks in sydney but will be there soon!
Giacomo I'm way more keen on heading through northern Italy as opposed to france, I love mountains, I am also a history student so the steppes of the Volga appeal to me too! Tobi where are you located at present? Have read some of your posts, very informative and awesome travels man. Thanks both Tom |
Brenner should be fine, but you can forget any of the back roads / passes. I rode down there around this time a couple of years ago and the passes were all still blocked. It was snowing lightly as I went over the Brenner, but nothing major and the autobahn itself was clear. Here's a link to webcams on the A13

Today I rode from Nürmburg to Modena, the brenner pass was the easy bit, and because no trucks (Easter Sunday) it was awesome!
The hard bit was Ingolstadt to the border, COLD and very poor visibility. Keep smiling Tom |
That's good to hear. I had you in my thoughts these days, since the "exceptionally bad weather" that hit Europe these past weeks, certainly didn't spare us down here. ( It was snowing here on the Adriatic coast yesterday...:freezing: )
I hope it gets better as you make your way further south and east. Safe travels. Antonio |
