Good Africa route given current instability.
Hoping to head to Africa from Europe in September. Ideally it would be Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and south. I think Egypt is probably OK, not sure about Libya or even if I can get a visa for it?
Then further south is Sudan and South Sudan - I'm assuming I can go Sudan/Eritrea/Ethiopia/Kenya and south from there, avoiding the Sth Sudan border areas. Anyone have any recent experience? thanks Trevor |
Hello Trevor,
I'm planing the same, also in September. Would be great to sync up with recent findings. send me a PM if you like to exchange email addresses. The route you have in mind if not likely to work. At my latest knowledge it is currently not possible to get a visa for Libya and the security situation in Libya is in a way that you would like to travel. The only option I'm currently seeing is to go through Turkey and take a RORO ferry from Iskenderun to Egypt. Egypt should be reasonably ok. I'm traveling to Egypt next week. Will check with some local people. Sudan also is ok but you sure want to avoid south sudan. Once in Ethiopia you should be ok. I just mailed the RORO operator for confirmation about transport of motorcycles times and cost. Let's see what they respond. Otherwise the only option I can see is to ship the bike by boat of flight to egypt. DAvid |
Hey thanks David, yeah let's exchange info.
I took a ferry from Alexandria to Piraeus in Greece, with a bike, in the 80's, I wonder if something like that is still running? Was only once a week at the time. Also wondered about a boat from Cyprus to Israel, then cross to Egypt at the Sinai crossing. Which brings up other issues of course, like what does it take to get into Israel, and probably the need for a second passport for the Israeli stamp if any travel is the mid-east is anticipated. |
Hi Trevor,
Nope, there is nothing like a ferry existing. As I said, the only option known to me is the roro ship Fromm Turkey to Egypt. They also do a stopover in Haifa. Passport however is only one of the challenges you will face. The other one will be you Israeli stamp in the carnet. We dropped Israel from our wish list. Also border crossing at Aqaba appears to be challenging. Are you going by motorcycle? There are additional challenges with 4 wheel drives at borders. As mentioned all of this is my current best knowledge. Davis |

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ij16Er0nSC...ge-borders.jpg Link: Howto reach or avoid egypt on your Transafrica over the east The ferry between Turkey and Egypt (Iskenderun, Haifa and Damietta) is one of your options. You dont have to leave at Haifa, you can also use the ferry till eqypt. You dont have to use the carnet in Israel, if you leave at Haifa. You dont have to stamp your passport from israel too, they do it to an additional paper if you want that. Also the west coast of africa is an option: Link: Travellers on a transafrica over the west Hope that help you with planning your trip... Surfy |
