GSM in Africa

Hello. What is a best method to be with connection in Africa? Is there an united communication statement in Africa? Can I use only one sim card all over the continent or it must be different in every country? Which communication statement should I select?

SIMs

Various operators work in various countries down the west coast route but you can be guarateed not to have the right sim at the right time. Budget in for a local sim in each country (£1-£1.5). Text'ing international numbers is amazingingly good value, credit is plentiful by the roadside and you can then get people to call you back using "telediscount" from the UK and they pay only 3-15p a minute.

Using european mobiles in Africa is expensive (£1.75 on orange). If all members of your group have a local sim it makes communications a breeze.
