Guatemala Roads
Will be traveling in Guatemala this March and have a question on a couple of roads. Specifically are they paved or dirt.
Will be leaving Flores traveling south to Sayaxche and on south to Hwy 5. From there, west on Hwy 5 to Coban. Then Hwy 7W to Huehuetenango and Hwy CA1 to La Mesilla, where we cross the border back into Mexico. Any info would be appreciated. Anything we shouldn't miss along this route, places to stay or eat. We will of course be going to Tikal. TIA |
Guate
Hi Twofinger
I plan a two month trip to Guate too . I hope see you there. Zissimo |
All paved except for much of 7. I've ridden 7 in the rain and it was only bad directly where fresh construction was taking place.
The little ferry barge at Saxayche is kinda neat. Semuc Champey(?) is a little east of Coban, and is beautiful country. The small Hotel Mayab in Flores was OK for me at about $7.50 per night. I've stayed there on two trips. Net svce in the lobby. --1st left after crossing bridge, go to end but not down to lake, turn right, on your left The Hotel Carlos V in Coban was about $13 and very nice. Stayed there twice. --You'll have to ask for directions. It's very confusing. :) |
Guatemala road dirt or paved
Thanks for the info Lone Rider. Any suggestions for staying on pavement going west from Coban to exit at the La Mesilla crossing on CA 1 into Mexico.

CA 14 (Hwy 17) out of Coban, south to CA 9 east of GT City. If it's dry, I highly recommend taking Hwy 7. It's very beautiful country, plus you don't have to pass through GT City. |
