Has anybody driven through North Africa recently.
 

Hello all i'm new to this site just looking for advice has anybody driven through North Africa in recently years. A few years back i drove from London to Mongolia in a banger and now i wanna do a similar thing maybe from London to Cameroon. Of course i have read some things from the foreign office and counter terrorism unit saying certain countries they don't advise people to travel because of a spate of kidnappings etc. At times they can go overboard main countries they mention are Algeria-Mauritania-Mali is there any safe places to cross or far too risky? What country are you from, and what mode(s) of transport do you use?

I'm from the north west of England and my mode of transport is a car of some description. Yes ive been sifting and reading many threads which is not easy as there is much but im trying my best to find the answers.

I just did Dakhla - Atlas - Marrakesh - Casa , a few weeks ago , lots of police controls . beautiful road though.

Cheers doing that route in a little banger especially Western Sahara is it doable.

Hi, am on my way to SA on motorbike. Now in Mali, so far everything should be do-able on a little banger (Maybe even to much good tar). There are regular rally's with bangers from Europe to this area. Also met a couple along the way. You might get stuck once or twice depending on your route. The main route across west Africa at the moment is the Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauri, (Senegal), Mali one.

Many who travel locally think the FCO map for Mali is a little OTT.

I'm also from nw england and am planning biking down to SA, hopefully setting off end march/beginning april. still unsure whether to go down west or east side...ideally id like to go east as im going to kenya, however word at the moment seems to suggest difficulties accessing/shipping to egypt via eastern europe...
