help planning the route from Portugal to Nepal

Hello all :scooter:,

I'm planning a big trip from Portugal to Nepal in 2016 with my wife and for that I request your help.

From Portugal to Turkey, its not that difficult to choose the route, but from there to Nepal I would really appreciate your help.

- How to go from Turkey to Nepal?
- Is Pakistan safe to go trough?
- If not going trough Pakistan what route do you advice?
- Is the tour agency/guide in China always necessary?

Route until now:
Portugal
Espanha
França
Italia
Eslovénia
Croácia
Bósnia
Montenegro
Albania
Grécia
Turquia

I really appreciate your help on this.

Thank you
Ciber.

I’m doing the same ride starting from Turkey about April 2016 and have many of the same questions. I’m planning Turkey > Georgia or Armenia > Azerbaijan > ferry to Aktau, Kazakhstan > Uzbekistan > Tajikistan > Kyrgyzstan….

From Kyrgyzstan (probably Irkeshtam pass) will need to enter China with two options 1) to Kashgar and then KKH to Pakistan, and into India at the Wagah border just outside Lahore… or 2) to Kashgar and overland through Xianjing and Tibet to Nepal.

Would love to see recent reports of overlanders who’ve done option #1 – there does not seem to be any recent reports out there. In any event, Pakistan does present challenges in terms of securing a visa, the ever-changing security situation, and the mandatory requirement to travel in a military convoy through some areas.

Not sure if the military convoy is a requirement for the KKH to Lahore, maybe someone knows….? It's not a long ride from China to Lahore / Wagah, about 1100 km. One New Zealand rider crossing Pakistan from India to Iran a few months ago was in a convoy much if not all of the way…

As far as I know, a tour guide in China will be necessary regardless of which option is chosen. I got a quote from Navo Tour for $7500 USD for a solo rider for the passage from Kashgar to Nepal. 12 days I think it was. Not that I would want to do it solo... with a group, might get it down to $1000 USD per rider or so.

Thank you for the quick reply Ride Far. By reading your blog, I see that you are an expert on this kind of trips ;).

I will go with my wife and security is a huge concern for us so some countries we would like to skip.

I would like to visit Iran also, isn't that an option for for instead of taking the boat? 7500$ is a huge amount just for china. 1000$ is acceptable...

Does anyone knows the price to ship the bike from Turkey to India or Nepal ?

Thanks in advance.

Heading east from Germany in spring 2016

Hi there,

GF and I are planning to leave Germany next spring via ...Turkey, Iran, the Stans into...
a) ...Iran - PAKISTAN (Belochistan) - India...
or
b) ...CHINA - Pakistan (KKH) - India...

...then, ...further east.

As of now, the decision seems to tend towards b) China (when looking at the safety side of Balochistan).

In terms of cost sharing, it would absolutely make sense, to team up for the
China bit (as far as I read posts, blogs and things).

I am planning a trip as well from Portugal to Goa next year 2016 August- September-October.
Crossing China as a destination thru Tibet requires a group with:
a) Letter of invitation
b) Visa
c) Travel permits
d) Chinese driving license
e) Chinese Guide
We simply need to form a group and travel as a group to keep the cost down. Otherwise, I will join MotoExplorers China motorcycle expeditions - Ride to China to Bangkok.
Ciber, let’s connect and see if we can join the effort.
Thanks,
Manny

Hello everyone!

I am planning a UK>NZ trip probably starting towards the end of August. I have been in touch with a company called Navo who can supply a guide through China and hopefully make the paperwork easier.

I have quotes for getting to Laos through china but it's not relevant to this thread (PM me if interested).

This is what the representative had to say about exiting via Nepal a few days ago;

Quote:

a) For the travel route in China, I am afraid you cannot enter Nepal via the border Zhangmu before it reopens, as you may know, a horrible earthquake attacked Nepal in April this year, and the main border between China and Nepal—Zhangmu was closed due to the huge damage, so far, the border is still under rebuilding, based on the latest news from Tibetan authorites, Zhangmu will not open until 2019, so it seems entering Nepal via Zhangmu is not an option in next year.

Anyway, another potential option is another China-Nepal border, which is called Jilong(Gyirong), in order to keep normal bilateral trading and travel relationship, governments of two countries will gradually take Jilong (Gyirong) as the main border instead of Zhangmu. In this way, if Jilong will be the only border in next 2-3 years, hopefully, self-driving groups will also be allowed to enter and exit via this port; However, now, Jilong is also under the maintenance after the earthquake, the official stated: if situation is optimistic, Jilong will resume next year(2016), I will keep you updated then.
Not very conclusive but if not much changes, KKH seems to be the way to go! I am keen to hear about other people's recent Karakoram experiences in Pakistan. :scooter:

Hi Cwac
My boyfriend and I are planning to cross Kyrgystan-China-Pakistan via Karakoram in late Oct or early Nov 2016. I don't know if you'd be interested in teaming up to share the costs? We are already in touch with a tour operator through China (4 days) but have not made any fixed agreements yet. We are by Volkswagen van.
Best regards, Mia
