Is my budget out of line?
 

I'm looking for some feedback on my budget. I'm planning a 2 year trip around the world, starting Europe. I live cheap and did Laos on USD $400 for 9 weeks in 2000. I think CAD $37/average should cover me on a per day basis, excluding gas. What do you think? Camping most of the time, except Asia, where it is cheaper to sleep in $4/night rooms etc.

I think in North-West Europe you need 50 to 80 Euro /day with the price of food, campings, motels, tollroads etc.
The price of gas is very high too!

Sounds possible although a tight budget.

Camping in western Europe is roundabout € 10 - 15, which amounts to roughly CAD 16 - 24. If you cook your own food, yes, it should be possible. No need to travel on toll roads...

Gas prices in Germany are +/- € 1.30 for super and € 1.26 for regular per litre. Eastern Europe should be cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. Indeed, I'll be cooking my own food. The average is $37/day. In Asia, I suspect that will drop to below $10/day, given my previous experience.

Your budget seems good for daily living expenses of food, accomodation and some tourist sites here and there. Western Europe will kill you, even if camping and cooking your own food, but Asia is pretty cheap as you already know.

But I am assuming that this budget amount excludes your costs for shipping, visas and major bike expenses? These will obviously add more to your costs if you convert them to a daily basis.

Petrol is expensive everywhere nowdays, we paid about $2usd per liter in Turkey and are now paying $1usd per liter in Pakistan.

Yes, $37 is food/camping. Gas, visas, flights are all separate.

Only talking for europe here:

37CAD$ = 26euro /day should be ok for camping/sleeping only, but it's tight:

1.5euro for fresh bread in the morning

3euro for a sandwich at noon

5euro for a coke, a coffee and an icecream on the road

7euro for a piece of meat, pasta/potato and some vegetables (cooking yourself)

leaves you with 10 euro for sleeping(camping only with that budget).

Camp in the wild for two days and you can visit a museum(or go to a cheap italian restaurant)...

37$ per one person, food and camping only???

We did Asia less than with this money per two people. Every third night were in tent camping mostly wild.

So it is DOABLE!!! If you take average on your living style. Europe will probably take slightly more, but you'll save up in Asia and S-Am. Europe takes you around 50$ CAD or so. Don't spend here long http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif.

I know Europe will take a bite out of the budget. However, when I am there, Aril 15 to May 15, I can sleep for free at various locations. Except when I head down to Brindisi to hop on the ferry to Greece. When I leave Brussels, I'll be heading down to Brindisi in a few days, max. I've lived in Europe for 20 years and dragged up and down it a fair bt in my youth. No need spend a lot of time there. Asia is dirt cheap, I know. Been to a few countries there and with lavish living was unable to spend $20/day, so I should save some money there. South America is going to be spendy again, some with Australia and New Zealand.

For OZ - camping can be free. Most 'State Forests ' have free camping grounds. Some 'National Parks' have them too. Do not expect them to have showers - usually a creek for a swim.
Pubs usually have accomodation - and they can be fairly cheap (relative) say $20 for a nigh t with breakfast. Some are more expensive than this .. you can ride by and free camp somewheres. The food is usally good value at the pub. But not for vegitarians!

In OZ carry water. There is not much of it in some parts and you will need a drink when you stop.

Also check the communities section of thid site. Many will put you up for free in return for some travel tales !

Don't visit any restaurants, buy your food & drinks at supermarkets instead and see that you camp in the wild now and then - you do find hideaways if you look for them. Then you'll probably make it with less than Can$ 37 a day.
