Italy to Dover in a day - anyone done it?
Hi All,
I need an MOT rather urgently, but am living in Italy. Was thinking of blasting back to the UK, bagging the paperwork and then zipping back here again. Google maps says yes. Does anyone have a speedy route for such a trip? Any input would be appreciated. Cheers Sharpie |
Depends which part of Italy!
I have ridden London to Milan in a day, only stopping for fuel, all on motorway/autoroutes. Channel Tunnel - Rheims - Dijon - Macon - Geneve(near) - Mont Blanc tunnel - Milan. |
I did Buckinghamshire to Pisa, a long while ago, think it took about 16 hours door to door including ferry.

Do you actually need your MOT for any reason other than to acquire UK road tax ? if not just get the bike on SORN, sorry if I am 'off target'!

thanks for the input...
Perugia to Varese, tour of the MV Agusta factory, then blast to Calais for the chunnel. Sounds doable. Bucks to Pisa is about the same distance. Have fried my brain looking for a way around the MOT. Sorn cant be used out of UK. that said DVLA are just awkward. Could get Italian MOT, but insurance wont recognise that. Dont care about the tax, or MOT really, just dont fancy explaining to an Italian judge that I ran over someones child and have an unroadworthy vehicle. I dont like prison showers!! Cheers guys. Lets see if Perugia - Folkstone - Perugia can be done inside 48 hrs including and MOT. |

SORN is declaring the vehicle is not on a UK public road. The alternative being a need for Road Tax for it being on a UK public road. Gone are the days of telling them its actual location - just that it is not on a public road within the DVLA's jurisdiction. These are other threads on the topic - particularly exhaustive (and exhausting!) is http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ong-term-39472 As you will read, DVLA has absolutely no idea! They reply to queries about this, issue statements and instructions then withdraw them as being wrong. You get no consistent advice or help from them. |
i have done dover to venice in 26 hours including stop for rear shock fail. so 24h is doable if you push hard and stick on the motorways..
best luck |
Can you not take a little longer and enjoy it?
What you save by not using peages ( esp the 28 through switzerland) will pay for cheap hotels |

You make a good point. Its opportunity cost of not working added into the equation. But, I find motorways very boring at the best of times so will look into the 28. Cheers |
