Libya - Transit
 

Does anyone know if its possible to cross Libya without a guide? We just want to take the coastal road from Egypt to Tunisia and only spend a week in Libya.

I've just had a look at the Sahara Overland website.
Looks like it should be ok, as long as you don't stray off the main coast road. The tricky bit might be getting the transit visa in the first place.

We are also looking for info on transitting Libya, we will be arriving from Tunisia end September and currently planning to go through Libya onto Egypt.

There are quite a few threads on this but they are quite old. I have sent two mails to companies who assist with Libyian visas but haven't recieved any replies.

Anyone who has recent experience with transit through Libya? Info appreciated!

It looks like I have some informations for you guys... :thumbup1:

I'm taking my boat for Tunisia on next Sunday (13th of July), then I'll go all around the Mediterranean Sea, Libya, Egypt, Jordania, Syria, Turkey, East countries...

So I had to deal with the Libyan customs before departure to get all the required paperwork. And I got this famous "visa transit". So I'll have 14 days (before I got it last week the Libyan consulate in Marseille, France, told me it would only be valid for 7 days but actually it's ok for at least 14days) to cross Libya ON MY OWN, NO GUIDE NEEDED.

But I've been warned again and again by the consulate in France not to get out of the coast road. It's a transit visa, just for crossing Libya so if they find you in the far desert in the south they'll probably ask you what you're doing there...

So now, how do I got it ?
- I had to send a hand writed letter telling them what were my plans (crossing Libya from Tunisia to Egypt by bike without visiting Libya, JUST crossing Libya along the coast, etc) and TELLING THEM I WAS APPLYING FOR A VISA TRANSIT.
- I had to send them the copy of my passeport
- I had to wait 2 weeks
- Then they called to tell me my visa transit was accepted
- so I had to get my passport translated in Arab by the Libyan French Consulate approved translator (nothing official here, his office is... his dinning room in his flat, with all his kids messing around. He just translate your passport quickly on the table and ask you 45euros... in cash of course. But he is the only one approved by the consulate... that's already Middle-East lol)
- then I went to their consulate to fill an official form, to give them two ID pictures and 80euros

And it was done!

Getting the visa for Syria was easier AND CHEAPER! :cool4:

I hope I'm clear enough. You should call your local Libyan Consulate and just ask. That what I did because on the internet I found everything and nothing about these transit visa. So call and get the infos from the guys who knows :smartass:

I applied for transit visa in Cairo embassy, but gave up after waiting five weeks no response from Tripoli. Presently on way around E Med. Mr Sameh is the man who deals with it in Cairo. His English is quite good.

can you tell me which company run the ferry from France to Tunisia? and how much is it?
is there any web site for it ?
maybe we can meet on the road some where in Libya or Egypt ,still getting some problems regarding my CARNET if it will be ok i will start my trip
