london to cape town from feb 2014
Hi guys,I am new to the site and need some advice.
I want to ride down from LONDON to Cape Town in February along the West Coast of Africa. What route would you recommend, and countries + not staying on paved roads where possible. What paper work and visa's. Any info what so ever would be great. Thinking of travelling for about 3 month's. Thank you. |
We did the same in two months. You should find some useful informations and a daily diary here:
Trans-Africa I try there too to collect all links to blogging people on the westroute who start from 2012 upwards. I suggests to optain as many Visas as possible in your homecountry, to be able to use the limited time for travelling, and not for paper work. Surfy |

If you had any change to spent more time there - do it! The costs of a 2 months or 6 month trip are near the same, when you cook yourself and usually doing wildcamping. And you can see more :-)
But it is possible look at my blog we did a daily diary - also just had 2 months - you will get a feeling for. Better doing it in 2 months than never ;-) In Namibia we decide to do an 4500km extra look to Botswana - because we still have time. Issac - also here at Hubb, did a africa roundtrip by bike in 2.5 Monaten and 42.000 Kilometers... Surfy |
Thanks Surfy! We have four and a half months for our trip.. I always believed that the route through western Africa would take a lot longer because of all the visa's. But it's good to know there is an alternative to the eastern route.

This works only when you have a short timeframe, because some visas are just valid for 2 months... Surfy |
Hi JC,
We're planning about the same trip (albeit not as far as Cape Town) leaving at the same time in a 4x4. We're a little delayed by life, paperwork etc but should be leaving the UK around the same time as you. We're allowing around 3 weeks to get down as far as Senegal (and then returning later to carry on) Be interesting to keep in touch with plans etc. Tariq |
