London to S.Africa via Iran
Hi all,
Just getting serious about a trip I have been pondering for a while now. From London where I live to S. Africa via the following countries: (Across Europe) Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, S. Africa I did a North to South America trip a few years back on the same F650GS twin so I'm just wondering if anyone can give me a few tips on what might work differently - I'm aware of the Carnet thing. Thanks for any thoughts! :thumbup1: |
It is doable as far as I know.
You will need to go through UAE as well from Iran to Saudi Arabia. There is a couple of friends they did it on the other way round from Sudan to SA-UAE-Iran-Turkey. Check their website and drop them an email: wanderingfootsteps.com. They did it around 2014 or 2015. They were travelling in a LandCruiser but I am sure they can provide you with some insight and advice about border crossings etc. Hope that helps ;-) Nikos |
I think it's nigh on impossible to get a visa for Saudi Arabia at the moment, even a transit visa. But it's always worth a try I guess: it might have changed by the time you are on the road.
If it doesn't work you could go to Oman and ship from there to e.g. Sudan, I think. |
Thank-you Nikos! Very helpful. Does look a bit terminal for my plans the more I look into it as Iran visas require an organised tour and Saudi Arabian visas require you to be visiting family... Hmm will have to re-route! Maybe just Africa, no Middle East.. <sigh>
Thanks very much for the help anyway! Guy |
Thanks wickychicky - I've sent emails to the Iranian and Saudi Arabian embassy's to double check there's no wiggle room but I guess in the current climate it seems highly unlikely - I may have to avoid the Middle East altogether and go from Turkey to Egypt or something like that.
Thanks for the helpful reply anyway! Guy |
I should just point out for anyone skimming through this that a Visa for independent travel in Iran is possible for many nationalities but not for currently for UK, USA or Canadian passport holders (I'm British)
