London to Accra (Ghana)
Just starting to put together a plan for a run down to Ghana on the bike. Lots of very very interesting routes - Morocco and Western Sahara I know well, but from there on out I know very little... what would people recommend? Anywhere to particularly avoid?

I thought you’d be swamped with replies by now Matt. It’s been a few years since I was last down that way so much of my info will be out of date, but the only bit I found tricky was the Rosso crossing from Mauri to Senegal with its both sides of the river aggressive hustlers. The rest was just the usual careful prep riding that you’ll be familiar with if you’ve been through Western Sahara.

Hi Matt,
My partner and I did Accra to London a few years ago (2017) over four months. I cannot recommend it highly enough; super friendly people, some genuinely interesting/amazing sites to see, an array of different road surfaces and a genuine sense of adventure. We (broadly) followed the coast, albeit heading inland in Cote d'Ivoire (to see Yamoussoukro and some of the amazing interior), Liberia (no passable coast road), Guinea (to visit the beautiful Fouta Djallon) and Mauritania (to see the desert proper). Yes, it’s hot. Yes, the cities are a mess. Yes, the police can be a pain (albeit we only paid two bribes in the whole trip) – but that’s all part of the fun. I wrote about the border crossings here: https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hu...ithout-89519-2 (scroll down). Or DM me any questions you may have. Thanks |
