I am currently looking at options for some time I have spare in January.

I'm toying with the idea of an overland trip and have always fancied riding to Mongolia.

Does anyone have any experience of this part of the world at this time of year.

Is it just really cold or Suicide?

I don´t have experience of this region but I know that (average!) temperatures from 7 (day) to -15 °F (night) are pretty cold, aren´t they? ;-)
