Mexican inport permit

I want to travel around Mexico and Central America this summer by bike. Acording to the Mexico consular info sheet I will have to put up a bond ($200.to $400.) with Mexican customs to guarantee departure of the bike from Mexico within a stated time period. It goes on to say that to recover this bond and avoid any charges that the traveler must return to the same customs office upon departure from Mexico. I really don't want to exit by the same route I came in on. Can anyone give me info on this subject.
Also, I would like to go all the way down to Costa Rica. Does anyone have info that would be useful for/at border crossings.

There's a link just to the left on the page beside your post - "Border Crossings" - with good detail on Central American borders.

You do not have to exit at the same border crossing you entered. You also don't have to put up a big bond. Don't know where that comes from. Perhaps "import" is the wrong word to use - try "passing through" and all you need is insurance and a small entry fee. Search the site for Mexico and insurance and you should find plenty of info.

Anywya, it's no big deal, just arrive, pay the reasonable fees and off you go. Leave wherever you like.

Thank you for the info Grant. I down loaded the info I referenced from the Mexican gov. site. I thought it seemed odd since all the journal entries and tips I had read made no reference to the any deposits. I just wanted to check and be sure I did not received any more surprises than necessary at the borders. Thanks again.
